Livingston MT First time!!!
« on: November 06, 2013, 11:30:28 AM »
So my dad and I are headed to Livingston on the 15.  Our first trip to Montanta.  We are hunting a ranch for deer the first 3 days then are going insearch of elk.  I have been looking at google earth, and maps but wanted to see if anyone has hunted that area for elk and if so what to expect.  We have no spots to go so I was thinking for going up the Shields river??  If anyone has any advice or experiences they want to share that would be awesome!

Thanks Thunt

Well since you are ranch hunting you might want to say the ranch so you can see if others have hunted it. If not you might want to ask the owner of it for contacts and contact them.

I have hunted the Shields river valley for many many years but for small game almost all private and $$$ talks there !!
Elk you will need to go more north, there's some around at the timber line in the Crazy's but its hard to get on any land
This place protected by God and Guns trespass and you might get to meet Both !

Ok great thanks for the info.  I was also looking at the Bridger Canyon rd. out of Bozeman.  Im sure it gets hit hard being that close to town but looks like some great country.

It does get hit hard, and a lot of the elk end up on private land in the Battle Ridge area.

I am hunting bridger canyon road as we speak. We have 1200 acres of private ground to hunt. Been at it for 3 days and havent seen an elk yet. No snow up in bridger bowl to push them out. We are hunting at 6500 feet and there is no snow at all. We are going to try again tomorrow. If we come up with mothing, we are headed home.

It's going to get cold this weekend. Possibly single digits.
