You need a special permit AND authorization to hunt geese in SW WA in units 2A and 2B. You have to take a test to make sure you can identify all 7 sub-species of Canadas which winter here. They're trying to save a goose which, left to natural selection, would be gone by now. But it allows them to get an additional $7/yr out of everyone who participates.

So- not only do you need to figure out what kind of ducks you may encounter to shoot at, you need to be able to identify species on the wing because there are restrictions in place for certain ducks and/or sex. That is the easy part. Figuring out where to go hunt can be just as much fun... some are tidal, some are not. Depending on where you are hunting there may or may not be restrictions on the time you may enter the property and the time you need to be out of the property. There are also limits to the number of shells you may have on your person on some of these properties. The total number of shotshells can vary or may not even exist. Some state managed properties even restrict how many persons may use the property at any time. And of coarse- there are some time specifications as to when you can actually set out your decoys... And as previously mentioned, you may need additional authorization cards to hunt certain species, or to hunt in certain geographical locations. It's all laid out in the regs...

Telling the difference between a pinny and a hen mallard is child's play compared to telling the difference between a Canada and a Canada. :chuckle:

All species of north american ducks can be found in the Pacific Flyway, with only a couple exceptions: We do not have Black ducks, or Tree Ducks, and I think there is a species of Eider that only lives on the atlantic side of the continent.

Basically it's easier  to list what western washington DOESN'T have.    :chuckle:

Jimbo: "That's right, Stanley. Animals are much easier to shoot in the morning."
