What knives do you use?
« on: November 05, 2008, 10:56:32 AM »
Just wondering what knives that everyone uses while they are hunting or everyday use.

For deer and elk I have a three in one folding hunter from Cabelas. It has a gutting blade, bone saw, and a regular blade on it. Works great for all around general gutting and cleaning. Another knife that I just picked up this year that is awesome is a Havalon Piranta Tracer 22. It uses replaceable surgical blades. As soon as one gets dull you pop it off and replace it with another one. It works great and has improved my pheasant breasting and leg removal times considerably. The only disadvantage that I see to this knife is you should have pliers on hand to remove the dull blade to be on the safe side. For my personal everyday knife I have a Benchmade folding pocket knife. It holds a good edge as my thumb can personally attest to a few weeks back :'(.

Here is a link to see the Havalon knives (they will be at the bottom of the page):  http://www.king-cart.com/cgi-bin/cart.cgi?store=apc&product=Knifes

So lets hear what everybody uses.

I've gone back to the old buck 110 lockback. Takes a great edge easily, and holds it very well.

Those Ruana are good looking knives hp; I like that custom skinner...Might have to put that on the Christmas list.

My latest purchase was a Knives of Alaska Elk Hunter, good knife.

I've used the same knife for 20 seasons, and gutted and skinned a lot of animals with it.  It's a Dallas Cutlery--Lynx, been a great knife.

I have an "odd" collection that I hunt with.

I have a cattaraugus 2250 commando (WWII military issue) that I still use, it looks just like this. I inheritted this knife from my Father.

I think this one should be retired for sentimental reasons, though this knife has done allot of hard work and has been a great tool.

I also use a SOG SEAL (a life saver) and SOG SEAL PUP, both great knives.

A Browning model 670 4 1/2 in straight (very good utility knife)

All sharp enough to shave with.
As you can tell I prefer a straight knife. I also carry a Leatherman Wave.

Cheap $5 Victorinox straight 3 1/2" bladed knives.  Small, super easy to sharpen, sharp!  laugh-- but they are absolutely wonderful skinning and boning knives that have orange or red handles and you won't care if (when) you lose one.  Try them out they are terrific.  I used them for everything from Bison, Moose, Caribou and Brown & Black Bears...  I carry three, they weigh about an ounce each and a tiny collapsible sharpen stick to hone the edge.  Can be bought at any quailty butcher store.

I use the Kershaw Ken Onion Blur with S30V steel.  In my opinion the relatively new S30V steel makes an amazing blade.  My hunting partners use the Blade Tech's with the S30V, kind of spendy but amazing when you have an elk to bone.

Have had these knives for years.  Hard to keep from rusting but stays sharp a long time.  I love the looks of them to.

I have the Kershaw blade trader, but I'm not sure how I like it. I have been packing my older Kershaw that is just a small folder. My everyday carry knife is the CRKT Mini My Tighe.
