Fun Idaho Whitetail Hunt
« on: November 21, 2013, 06:42:19 PM »
Headed down to hunt some whitetails in Idaho with a couple of old college buddies.  First stop was Slate Creek, just North of Riggins.  This was on the 15th.  Beautiful country and a few deer but zero rutting activity.  Not even a spike or forky for my buddies boys to shoot.  Headed up to Kooskia on the Clearwater on the 17th and magic was in the air.  Bucks everywhere, and they were hot on the does.   I shot this guy at at 260 yards with my 7mm at 1:00 on an open hillside hot after a doe.  That was on the 18th.  Went out on the 19th. and all the bucks we saw were cruising.  Seen lots of does that did not have bucks with them.  Over the two days on the Clearwater, I probably saw 20-25 different bucks .  I've hunted this area several times but have never seen it like this.  I'm pretty happy with this buck.  I saw maybe one other deer that was a little nicer, but no monster.  Passed on several 3 and 4 points and a couple little 5 x 5's.  Don't think I saw a bonafide whopper in the bunch.  Hunting whitetail in the peak of the rut is something everyone needs to experience at least once.  The 17th and 18th of Nov. are my new favorite dates marked on my Fall calendar

Congrats on a good looking buck.

Sweet! I'm going over next week for a blackpowder hunt for elk and deer. We'll be in unit 14 for elk and 16 for elk and deer. My buddy who lives in Lewiston has been hunting/scouting for our trip said last Sunday the whitetails were crazy hot and chasing does everywhere. He was up high in the snow, up to 2 ft deep and said the deer were going to town up there. The elk he'd seen earlier in the season were gone though.
