Very new to the site and reasonably new to hunting as well. Hypothetically, would any of you have used your sidearm when yelling at the coyotes had zero effect? Maybe a round in the dirt in their vicinity to scare them off? Would you have been concerned that a gunshot would cause your deer to spook and travel even further from sight?

That said, beautiful buck and congratulations!

Awesome buck. Sometimes I wonder if
"being sneaky" backfires....ot maybe it's just plane luck in this case. Regards, well done!!

Great buck, way to stay calm and get it done.

Too bad you couldn't have roasted those two fawn killers too but a great hunt!
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

Welcome to the site  :hello:.
As far as side arm use if you are to the point of shooting....... KILL the coyotes! If you are to the point of needing to shoot you are no longer concerned about the deer. In this case, by the time the coyotes showed up he knew his shot(s) on the deer killed it so I would not have hesitated to let the air out of one or more coyotes.

Nice buck. I had a similar encounter with coyotes on a scouting trip. Glad I always pack a side arm - only got one of them.
