New Waterfowler in Kennewick
« on: November 24, 2013, 05:26:03 PM »
I do a lot of upland game in the area but have been wanting to get involved in waterfowl for a long time. I went ahead and put waders and decoys on the birthday wish list this year and my wife got me 12 used mallards and a new pair of waders on sale from Cabela's. I also got a call and DVD with tips and calling technique but feel fairly lost when it comes to technique of calling, setup etc. Any tips you veterans could give to a newbie? Thanks for any help!  :hello:

 :yeah:

Always best to learn from someone with experience! As for calling advice, call loud when the birds are way off to get their attention but tone it down when they get close to your spread. If your in a good spot ( the X ) then you may not have to call much at all. Call at the birds when they are "banking around" on the outside edges of your spot. Try not to call when they are directy overhead as they can pin point your location. Go to a refuge or somewhere that ducks are concentrated and listen to the sounds they are making, then try to mimick them. Try to sound realistic. No duck will ever win a calling competion, you don't have to sound like those guys. Pay attention to whata working on any given day. Sometimes you have to call them all the way in to the decoys, sometimes they flare at your calling easily. Lastly, enjoy, its a blast to interract with the birds.
Fish hard, hunt harder!
