CVA Buckhorn 209 Question?
« on: November 24, 2013, 10:54:52 PM »
So I'm new to muzzleloading I've been rifle hunting since I was 12. This will be my first year for it and hopefully I'll fill my late season deer tag. So to my question to you all is I've ordered a CVA Buckhorn with a 209 primer I also ordered the replacement breech plug for the number 11 musket cap and the 6.1 mm nipple. I'm I good to go or do I need the conversion kit? When looking at the pictures the breech did not look right for the inline I'm thinking it is the wrong picture it being the same pic on Ebay and Amazon. Or is it right and do I need it? And if not I'm I good to go  :dunno:

If this is what you are getting - it is an open breech and would qualify for a PacNorWest if you use percussion cap ignition.

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

When I purchased this gun, it came with both breech plugs (209 and WA legal) and nipples for the #11 and musket caps.  I'd personally recommend the musket caps.  If it doesn't come with that in this purchase, then your auxiliary purchases will cover that.

You shouldn't need to purchase anything additional.

Also, don't be mortified when you can't shoot cloverleafs with this gun.  It just wont   :chuckle:

I shoot it but it's important to know your limits

To Sabotloader...........Yes I know what the rifle looks like I was asking " IF I NEED THE CONVERSION KIT" and if you google cva buckhorn conversion kit look at the picture and you tell me if that would work with this rifle. Which it does not by the picture.

To Jonthan_S....... Thank you and you new what I was talking about and thank's for the Heads up.

I THINK WHAT SABOTLOADER WAS SAYING/ASKING WAS....If this is the gun you purchased, then no...you don't need the conversion kit.

If I understand this right, in changing from 209 primers, which require a "firing pin" type impact to a flat strike for percussion caps, you might need a conversion kit to accomplish the changeover.  Somebody with actual experience might offer more info, since my experience is limited to Hawken type sidelocks.  I have had lots of experience with shotguns, and a 209 primer is a shotgun primer....
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"
