mt. goat on Colonel Bob?
« on: July 20, 2014, 10:00:33 AM »
Any of you locals see the picture in the Facebook post from an Amanda Park local?  A mountain goat up on colonel Bob?  Pretty interesting, seems a little far from home.

Ive heard rumors of them being in that area. Rare, but not unheard of. I have seen no proof, but have heard from a reliable source.

Mountain Goat are not always up in the high rocky mountain tops. They migrate. If you go up the Penny creek road, sometimes you will see one on the road at the 2500-3000 foot level. I took a picture of one some years ago. Seeing them in the timber is not that unusual. A little odd maybe, but not unusual. Their main enemy there is the mountain lion. There are large swatches of land where the mountain lions are thin. Those are areas where you may see a goat.
Mountain lion hunting is a family tradition to some of those living on the Olympic peninsula. Mountain lions roam in their back yards.

Wish I had permission to post the picture.  It was an amazing shot of a goat on the tip of a rock pile with lake quinault in the background.  It's not necessarily the elevation or terrain that surprised me.  I just didn't think they inhabited that part of the Olympics.  That's a very popular day hike and I'd never heard of a goat sighting until this one.

That's where the one I heard about was seen. In the mountains at the north end of the lake.
