Are there any grouse in Capitol Forrest?
« on: December 09, 2013, 12:21:41 PM »
I'm in the area just enjoying a day off from work and happen to have my shotgun on me. Are there any grouse in Capitol Forrest?

Yes, a few. I just saw a blue grouse up there a couple weeks ago. Was hoping to have it for dinner but he outsmarted me. Blues are few and far between. More ruffed grouse there but even they don't seem to be too plentiful this year.

Awesome. Were they on the roads or off the roads up in the trees?

The blue grouse was in the road and then flew into a fir tree as I drove by. When I got out with a 22 pistol I couldn't spot it, until it FINALLY decided to fly the heck out of there. :bash:

It was up high, about as high as you can get. It's pretty unusual to see a blue grouse up there. So don't be surprised if you see nothing.

I don't know about Capital Forest, but the area I hunted this weekend had Ruffed Grouse in areas with fist sized trees, ferns, and blackberries. God it was cold.

Clark County   ;)

We only came across a couple birds and they scared the crap out of me. I had a younger dog with me that hasn't seen a grouse before so she bumped them and there was bear sign all over the location, some not steaming, but not frozen either and when the temps are between 9-15 degrees...

aint no grouse, the mucks gottem all  :chuckle: seriously though, its weird some places have quite a few birds and other places have zero birds when there were plenty of birds there at one time. i blame it on the possums and spraying, i beleive your best bet is walkn old alder roads that you cant drive on especially if there is some sort of creek along oneside of the road, old huckle berry stumps, old blackberry bushes, but alder patches are still a great place to find them especially if the snow berries are around and old salmon berry bushes, otherwise just drive slow and pick low branches and stumps apart  good luck..
