Back to BOW!!
« on: November 28, 2013, 05:17:21 AM »
Ok, HW,
I am coming back to bow hunting.  I have been away for a good number of years and have bought my first new bow since 93.  Needless to say somethings have changed.  I am always trying to learn and get information on anything to do with hunting.  Of course I am not going to ask for honey holes and or place to hunt for I have my areas already.  I am just wondering what some you you use for arrows, broadheads, and other bow hunting gear.  I am planning on going Elk next year and go deer the following year after a planned out of state deer hunting trip.  So any help from you guys would be great.  Arrow's broadheads and gear.  Just for my info.  I'm Shooting PSE Stinger 28'' draw at 70lbs.  Thanks again.

I Use 400 shaft easton aftermath arrows with a g5 montec broadhead. I put the rubber washer so i can line the broad head with my fletching.. For me it is very accurate.. I have also in the past used the Stinger buzzcut broadheads that worked well for me also. I have a few buddies that shoot shuttle t and have great success with them also.. those are the 3 i have seen in action and work well. For arrows i like my aftermath. i use to use goldtip but switched to aftermath.. i got more penetration on my deer with them and they are a little lighter arrow. just a few examples for you to try.

Try 4 fletched arrows. There is no need to line them up and you do not have to look down to nock your arrow.

I am a firm believer in a heavy stiff arrow. Better down range trajectory and penetration. Also much tougher. Shuttle T broadhead is a great choice. Spendy but well worth it. If you get a shot, you want your arrow /broadhead combination to do it's job. AAE Veins also work well. No prep necessary. Max Bond glue is wonderful. You can fletch a dozen arrows in 20 minutes ,go shoot them right away and pull them by the fletches if you want.

three blade you can also do the same with out lining them up. its just a personal preferance i do..

Buy the arrow you think you would get a complete pass through with. Sometimes heavier is not better. with my setup i have got complete pass throughs at 90 yards with no problems.. Its all what works best through your bow and your mind..

You can easily get passthroughs on deer with any legal weight arrow. When it comes to elk, it's better to be on the medium-heavy side. I like to be in the 430-450 gr range, gives me the best combo of Momentum/Energy and speed/trajectory. When calculating KE a light fast arrow will have close to the same amount of KE as a slower heavier one right out of the bow. But, once you get to 20+ yards the heavier arrow will have more KE/momentum and will penetrate better in heavy skinned animals like elk.

With a well placed legal weight arrow. I like arrows from 500 -550 grains. If your draw length will allow it.
