Rattling Montana
« on: November 28, 2013, 11:46:23 AM »
Well we had a great hunt, rattled in 7 or 8 bucks, and spent some great time together in the woods. My dad started things off by shooting a little 4x3 I rattled in early in the hunt. He should of let this one walk, but it's hard to when they come into the horns. Funny thing is my son would have been thrilled with that deer but shot his great buck the next day. The pics don't do his buck justice. It's got great mass and heighth with a couple stickers. I passed up several good bucks but just couldn't find the big one this year. I passed up the buck I shot 2 days earlier at about 20'. He came to the horns all fired up ready to fight but I wanted bigger. With the hunt winding down and me not wanting to eat my tag, I tagged out on him when he made the mistake of coming to the rattling again.
I found some new areas that I'm sure will produce something big but will have to wait for next year.

That's pretty cool 3nails. What days were you hunting there? Is it in middle of rut?

The last 2 weeks of November. Wish I had started about 3 days sooner. Rut kicked off earlier.

Were you hunting private land or public?

We intentionally avoided private land this year. All public! There's a lot of great public land to hunt in Montana and Idaho. Mostly western Mont that is.

Great job with some nice looking bucks. They all look like they were taking in a fairly open area and not real thick brush.
I hope when I die my wife doesn't sell my guns for what I told her I paid for them.

Let me know if you need any info on areas.

This is about as open as it gets there. Now that I think about it these were some of the more open areas we've rattled in bucks.
