Cherry Valley and Crescent Lake
« on: November 30, 2013, 03:58:17 PM »
Hi All,

So my buddy and I are new waterfowlers this season. We have gone out a couple times with a friend that knows what he is doing. He took us to some private land that we don't have access to unless he is with us.

I just got my Craigslist decoys painted up and want to try going out to Cherry Valley and/or Crescent Lake but have never been to those spots and was hoping that someone could help a newbie out with some info. I'm heading out that way Monday to take a look at some spots.

1. Can my buddy and I hunt there without a portable blind? Is there decent cover?

2. Will we be able to wade into the ponds to retrieve birds? Should I rig up a treble hook on a fishing pole?

3. Any advice or general info would be greatly appreciated!!!

We were taught to be respectful hunters and clean up shells/trash etc when we head out. Just looking to spend some time out in the rain with chances of a bird or two!

Thanks,

colin

To my knowledge there are no ducks at the CV yet....when raining you need to really watch out since the channels are very very deep . I'm not sure about pheasant season ,but last week the access was still limited to only 8am-4pm . Bring treble hook ,there is 2 blinds ..one down and the other one taken at times .....with the incoming freeze this week I expect the ponds to be frozen and you might do better at tidal marshes or salt water .... check migration info on DU site for Washington .
Everyone thinks that I'm freak ,I don't look different do I ?

Was out there a couple days ago not much water in the smaller ponds flooded fields. With the weather this week things may freeze up pretty bad.

Colin,

If you can! Hunt the area when the river is coming into the fields. It's better on the rise than it is on the decline. Be careful, know your route and don't take chances. Many hunters have paid the price hunting the flood. Post up if you get out.

Spent some time walking Crescent Lake this afternoon in some snow flurries!!! Only saw a pair of what I think were widgeons. They were pretty far off... and a couple coots. Might give it a try later this week.

Sooo many birds like a 1/2 mile to the south on some private lands... sooo close but sooo far.  :bash:
