Late archery elk down
« on: December 02, 2013, 10:02:48 AM »
Got this gal Saturday late afternoon in the Winston. Hadn't seen any fresh sign over two days. 40yd down hill shot in the timber. After the hit the woods erupted with 10 other hidden elk. Double lung shot, she went down with in sight. Epic trip as a I had my ten year old son on his first elk trip with dad and a good buddy who was elk hunting for the first time. They are both hooked. Only my second elk. One photo with my son and two "as she lays".

Nice job on a successful hunt. I was the guy that checked you into camp and said good bye when you left. I was in site 11 and we left Tuesday afternoon to get back home to begin our late muzzy deer hunt. Nice to see someone fill their tag and you guys got it done fast!

Excellent job, and great fun with your son and friend.

Please describe the situation more: "Woods erupted with unseen elk..."  I am sure that there are more elk out there, but I am just not seeing them.  Where were these other elk?  Did you have any idea they were there?  All cows and calves?

Congrats, was just there. Hunted Friday and Saturday morning with my son who was home from school. We had elk at 40yrds Friday morning but no opportunity. After that, nothing but had a great time with my son. I'm sure your son was totally excited after your success :)

Had no idea the others were there.  They must have all been bedded down and out of sight.  This one was standing up but not alert to our presence.  When the arrow hit 6-8 more elk, all cows, popped up and they all ran about 20 yds to a bench.  I whistled and they all stopped for a few seconds.  I saw the one I shot take a couple side steps at which time the rest bolted down hill through the timber.  Mine took a few wobbly steps after them and fell down.  Then the work began.  :chuckle:

Great story made even better that you could share it with your son. Congrats on putting down one of the biggest game animals in this state with your bow. Is that a Diamond, I shoot an Outlaw. That's going to be some good eating for a long time.

Yup, lefty Diamond Outlaw.  First kill with it. Killed my first elk with a Diamond Stud.
