I would go with a DVD set over a book. The drills are a lot easier to follow than in the books imo. With that being said pick a program and stick to a program. My biggest problem was I was trying to go through five different books and two DVD sets while flipping through 5 years of retriever journal magazines.  I would suggest Mike Lardy's and Evan Graham's programs they seem to be the most proven. How ever I really enjoyed the Working Man Retriever series(especially the condition retrieve dvds) and he is locale in Medical Lake. He does a great job of answering emails too. He also dies personal training sessions too. His name is Dan Hosford, he has own tv show too.

Havent heard of Dan until now and did a little youtube of his videos and they look pretty detailed. Any info on why his site WMretrivers.com is down?

Picked up my pup 5 days ago. Currently reading through "Water Dog" and James Lamb Free's book. After I finish these two books ill probably go out and pick up another book.

Link to a pdf article on puppy training by Lardy:  www.badgerstatehrc.org/Files/Training%20Tips/lardypuppytraining.pdf‎

I'm no pro, but If I only had $75 to spend on training materials, this is what I would spend it on:

Training with Mike Lardy Vol1:  https://www.ybsmedia.com/index.php/shop/product/35-training-with-mike-lardy-volume-i

Sound Beginnings:  https://www.ybsmedia.com/index.php/shop/product/42-sound-beginnings-puppy-training-with-jackie-mertens

I am about ready to list a batch of old journals or magazines in the classifieds.    I was going to see what I had, essentially either will list them by the year or a whole batch of Bird Dog or "The Retrieval Journal".  Keep an eye out.  They are nice magazines.

Retrievers from the inside  . . . out.
Butch Goodwin

I am a serious student of Retriever training and have a library that includes everyone from Dobbs to Wolters and everyone in between.
IMHO, Goodwin's program is the most complete work for training a working retriever, bar none.
Darned spendy, but worth every nickel.
Spent most of my $$ on huntin, fishin & retrievin dogs, the rest I just pretty much wasted.
