AK's shouldn't even be remotely considered a AR's equal. They are two completely different creatures, toe to toe. Head to head a AR will walk all over a AK, if one chooses to compare them in the same pool. It cracks me up! :chuckle:

LOL.  Contradicting yourself a bit.
If they are two different creatures, then you shouldn't compare them in the same pool, or state that one is better than the other. Obviously because they each have their own better qualities.

Contradicting?

If you can shoot both and see what feels best. Personally I like the AR platform better, I like things that are ergonomic. I have shot both and the AR is just faster in every way. The AK is for sure robust, reliable and simple as all get out but I don't like how they feel when reloading, shooting or even taking off safe. AR fits me best, see what fits you.

I have both and prefer the AK. Ak is just more fun to shoot in my opinion.

I have had several AR15s, and currently own two.  I hope to buy an AK soon, if for no reason other than my government is afraid of me having one!

So...you guys are saying, "go with the AR"....unless I plan on putting eggs, jack daniels, syrup, and bacon in the action.  But, If I do want to run breakfast thru my rifle....then I should go with an AK.

Ok, I got it.  :)

You would be surprised what a properly set up/ gassed AR can take.

And there in lies the biggest truth.  "Properly setup".  The AK takes no additional setup to be able to fire after putting your breakfast through the action!

Funny enough, it's also amazing how ergonomic an AK can get with a stock and pistol grip that fits you well. There are also receiver sights available for AK's. Personally I was amazed to find out how accurate my AK was with a little trigger work, a recoil spring to keep it from tapping the trunnion and some furniture. The adjustable cheek riser made a gigantic difference.

If you buy an AK and plan to shoot it a lot, get a 5.45x39 chambered rifle if you want to shoot cheap surplus.  :twocents:

looks like an aimpoint
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

The AK is the carbureted pickup truck that can run for 5000 miles without oil, and the AR is a direct injected, tuned sports car.  Since each one has a galaxy of aftermarket parts, it’s hard to make a definitive judgment. But more or less, the AK is undeniably more rugged and reliable and the 7.62x39 is a arguably a better man killer. The AR is more accurate, faster and lighter. It all depends on what you want it for. If we had a collapse in society, for me in the city, a lightweight, short barreled M4 would be my preference. If I was slogging through the Everglades, I would want that rugged AK.

But the thing that’s often overlooked in online conversations about guns is the weight. The AK weighs a ton.

I am not sure if my AK even makes it to 10lbs fully loaded. An old milled receiver/wood furniture gun is definitely a lot heavier but I wouldn't think anyone would be using a collectible like that for a shooter.

Don't get me wrong here, I am an AR fan and own both an AK and an AR. The AK is capable of plenty good accuracy if the barrel isn't ruined and the shooter has a clue. I've shot AK's with worn out original barrels and they suck, they keyhole at 25 yards etc...but so will an AR with a destroyed barrel! A good barrel on either will produce substantially better results, a trigger upgrade helps a lot too

If you're looking to inaccurately rain down a sheet of lead under virtually any conditions, go AK.

I wouldn't even begin to consider the AK in ANY hunting scenario, however. (Except maybe spot & stalk hunting for wild hogs in TX.)

AR is still fun to shoot, but also has the accuracy and precision potential that the AK just can't even dream about.
