I decided not to play in them anymore either. Too much cheating makes it very tough. When guys bring in 24 dogs in 24 hours somethings fishy. Too bad they have to be that way cause it could be alot of fun. I hear they are using thermometers in the bigger derbies now, that might be ok.

My buddy and I used to participate in a tournament in Hooper several years ago, but the cheating was bad (11 dogs in 18 hours) tough to do. To help level the playing field they started awarding the biggest male as the first place winner, the biggest female second place, smallest male 3rd, smallest female 4th and the most yotes 5th. It did help a little because the honest team still had a chance, even if they only shoot 3 yotes. I loved the derby, after hunting all night and day they had a big get together with a spaghetti feed and plenty of beer. Plus can you imagine all the stories of the days activities after a few beers. It was great.

I went out today, it was a great day for calling, cool, clear and no wind but things just didn't happened. I made about 6 good sets, no responses not sure what was going on.
Did happened to stumble on this poor little guy sun bathing himself at 325 yds. Saw one shot one, could have been worst.

Scored two today. Maybe 3???
First set I called a loner in at about 300 yards and it wouldn't close. It was skylined so I let it walk. Decided to head where it headed and stumbled on a threesome. The first saw me. The second and 3rd didn't. I popped one of them at 240 and it took off running.
I knew I hit because it bit and whirled but took off. I did manage to find it about 100-150 away piled up in the stubble. I hit it perfect! I've NEVER seen a coyote go that far with a boiler room hit. The damage was incredible on the exit. I'm just dumbfounded. The pelt was ruined, boiler room hit and it made it that far? Weird.
This was a hot female the male kept calling for her and I was able to howl him in. I still don't know what happened here. It was a 150 yard easy shot. I heard the report after the shot, but he ran up over a hill into a stubble field. WTF!!!
I circled the stubble and could not find that damn yote. So geuss it doesn't count. It was running hurt too. The only thing I can figure is that I splashed on the shoulder. If we had any snow left it would have been easy but I guess thats how it goes. Still pissed about that. I just can't figure it out.
#2 I sniped him at about 330 but couldn't get pics. Batteries died in the camera. Smallish male nothing spectacular.
I'm dog tired and a little PO'd. Gonna go take a nap.

yep. I'm not as happy with them as I was after the first dog. Think I'm gonna go back to the 52 match hollows after I shoot these up. They do the trick but I've really been blowing up these last few coyotes. They shoot VERY well, but boy howdy do they make a mess with the swift.

Chalk up two more for team Cant Hit Shat.
Howled in my first coyote today. To bad it was on the wrong side of the river. I was planning on mounting the first one I howled in.
The second one I happened upon while walking to my next set. It wa about 40 yards away and had no idea.

Nice, took the 250 out today huh?
We called in a group of 4 on our 1st and second sets. They hung at 400 yards from me though and I let them walk. My buddy never saw them on the 1st set. On the second I put him about 200 yards downwind of me but he missed a shot at one of the dogs. After that it was a bust. Started to get cold cold cold and windy. Bummer day but it was exciting to call in 4 at a time.
I played with that first group of dogs for at least 20 minutes but they just wouldn't come closer than 400 yads.

Long shots were possible so I took the -250. The first was the longest, and it was around 200.
Four in one stand, thats awesome. I've had that happen once and it was along time ago. Didn't shoot one then either.

No coyotes today, didn't even see or hear one. And you know what happens when you get bored.
