New fleshing beam

Built me a new collapsible fleshing beam today.  Nice and solid and adjustable height.

Nice.  I'm just getting started on one.  What kind of wood did u use for the beam? I'm not really sure if it matters.

I actually bought the beam a few years ago...sorry but I can't remember the type of wood.  Bought the rest of the wood today, out of the 70% off pile at Home Depot.  Got $11 in total wood and screws today.  I think I paid $15 for the beam 10 years ago.

It does really matter what kind of wood. You want a hard wood other wise your fleshing knife will gouge into the beam a little and create rough spots. You want everything to remain smooth.
Mine is out of a crabapple. I used to have one out of yew wood that was good. Any hard wood though is good.

Yes, that makes a nice surface. The only problem I have with it is what to do with the head. It's nice to have them come to a point so the head slips over it nicely.
One thing I have seen for sale but never bought was a fiberglass shell of a beam the you slipped over a 2x6. Looked like a good idea and would be similar to PVC.

  thanks for the idea. I'm gonna hit up fibertech in the Spokane valley and see what they have. They make all sorts of fiberglass boards there.  Need some new boards for the boat anyways. Thing I liked about the pvc it was hard to chip or gouge

I've seen some of the PVC fleshing beams with the end cut and rounded similar to a regular fleshing beam.

Oh those beams off F&T are really nice, I snapped up a few sizes so the wall mount will work really well.
