"How To" Digital Photography Book?

My little sister is looking for something to get me for Christmas, and I've come up with a book idea.  Last Christmas my girlfriend got me a DSLR camera with an extra lens (Nikon D3200), and I haven't even begun to unlock it's potential.  I've always used a point and shoot camera in the past, and am looking for a good book that explains all the settings, situations to use them, any other things to consider etc. with digital photography. I know there are some amazing photography buffs on here, and I'm hoping you guys could refer a good book I can ask for as a Christmas gift!

I wish I could help, but I would probably learn a lot from such a book.   I have learned everything from trial and error.  Besides, I don't think I really have that great of photography skill.  I just happen to be pretty woodsie so get in on a lot of critters.    I had a flyer of one, but I don't remember it.   I was thinking National Geographic maybe.   If you go to a big bookstore like Barnes, they usually have a good section of photography books.   You might take a gander and see if there is one that might fit your style.

"Captured" by Moose Peterson, or "Nature Photography" by Chris Weston are two I can think of right off the top of my head.  While concentrating on nature, they still cover much of the basics, and, since they are both Nikon shooters, the terminology they use will match what your menus and manual use.

Bryan Peterson, Understanding Exposure, has some awesome books out there that help understanding exposure aspects of photography. His photos are great too. Not wildlife though. I have read his stuff and it helps a ton but I have learned the most by going out and shooting. Also look for books specific to your camera. He simplifies everything for a beginner and also makes it a good read. Not boring. I often go read it just because I like his style of photography. Here is one of his books.

Good advice Bob, I'm going to start tinkering with settings after the Hawks game. 

Looks like a good line of books there timberghost, understanding the aspects of photography in general is as much what I'm looking for as anything.

I also like the wildlife photography options out there like you mentioned Ricochet. 

The whole idea for this camera was to get superb, vibrant, harvest photos.  I was especially inspired by Mrs. Bucklucky's mule deer harvest photos, which I believe were taken by Huntnphool.  I've got Adobe CS5, so I've got Photoshop, and I've got Lightroom 4 as well for any editing to really make photos 'pop'.

I found Scott Kelby's books on Digital Photography to be very good especially for beginners

Yeah Scott Kelbys books are pretty good. I really like his photoshop books too.

I'm thinking that Scott Kelby's will be the one I ask for! I've already read through it quite a bit on Amazon, and it's definitely what I'm looking for right now.  Thanks again everyone.
