98 Dodge Ram Tire rubbing sound?
« on: December 08, 2013, 08:38:18 PM »
So a little background, a couple of years ago, someone slid through a stop sign and hit the right front quarter panel of my 98 Dodge Ram 2500. I got it repaired by a reputable repair shop (his insurance), but was a little suspect of their work. They seemed kind of aloof when I asked questions. Not to mention they forgot to put some emblems on and didn't get the alignment checked (I took it back to them and told them it was pulling, it needed an alignment). Last year while getting a thorough prostate exam at Schwabs for some new brakes, I was told that my right front hub needed to be replaced. They replaced it and I haven't had any issues until this year hunting.

NOT in 4 wheel drive, when my wheel is cranked to the right (either backing up or going forward) I hear a rubbing sound from the right front wheel. I usually only put a few thousand miles on my truck (has 116k as of right now). Any ideas?

Thanks!

Have u put different or bigger tires on lately? My old 98 dodge I had problem with the tire rubing the radius arm if I was sitting a little funny on a hill or something but not driving around town

I bet your tire is rubbing just a little bit. Did you put mud flaps on ? Mine did that when I would turn and only on the drivers side for whatever reason. I did have oversized tires on it too.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

It is possible that your bearing repair may have been serviced incorrectly and a factory wheel shim may have been omitted during re-installation of the bearing in question.  Dodge has a technical service bulletin TSB 05-03-97 & TSB 05-04-99  covering this, which was extended to 2000 year models.

Also, check for any loose underbody mud shields. I have had one pop loose a bit and would rub against it when turning. Easy fix.

I'm trying to hunt down a tire rubbing sound in my 95,  sounds like a tire rubbing on the wheel well - only I'm in park  :chuckle:

I would tend to agree with the shim and bearing replacement.

Did you change tire size by chance since the hub replace or the accident?
Or new wheels?
If new wheels and also a change in tire size (width), it may be a wheel offset problem.
May also be a trac bar fallen out of adjustment and/or not addressed properly dating back to the accident repairs.

Hubs don't make a rubbing sound when going bad, they click. I had many years of jeeping and not packing the bearings because I never new until..............the bearings went bad from lack of grease.

Forgot to mention in an earlier post, it would be prudent to jack up the vehicle and check the ball joints for play, especially the lower ball joints.  Any visible or detectable looseness or play is unsatisfactory and should be replaced.

I would agree with the ball joint check.  I had mine go out as well.  I wouldn't think it would cause a rubbing sound.  Play in the steering, wandering, or obvious camber issues are usually the symptoms of ball joints.

The rubbing noise is probably just that,  If the tire is rubbing you should be able to see a clean spot on the tire where its making contact with something.
Probably the mud guard like stated in an earlier post.

If you do need ball joints, Carli's are the only way to go.  Rebuildable, serviceable, and a great warranty.  Expensive, and theres usually a waiting list, but well worth it.  I put these on my 2006 a few years back, and love them.

Thanks for the updates and the pics. I will have a closer look at them this spring when I get it jacked up and do some work on it anyways!
