Duck Hunting Blue Slough or Preachers slough?
« on: December 09, 2013, 03:12:16 PM »
Since the Potholes area is a glacier already I'm looking at new hunting spots on the west side.  Has anyone hunted around Blue Slough or Preachers Slough off the Chehalis river?  It looks like a birdy zone on Google earth.  I'm thinking of driving out and taking a look this weekend.

Haven't this year but have in years past.  Picked up a bird here and there but have never limited.  Best was four birds.  Lots of common mergansers and buffleheads..  There are hidden holes back in the marshy areas you just can't get to.  A lot of trees down across the sloughs too.  Will be ok with a jet but if you are running a prop, bring an extra one.

I'd probably paddle my canoe in and set up somewhere and see what I see.  Is there another area around there somewhere you might recommend?  I could check out the Sloughs one day and maybe the Chehalis wildlife area the next.  I've never been to either.

I'd stay out of the main river in a canoe.  You can launch at the parking area along the Blue Slough Rd.  I'd go east from there.  You can paddle to the end of the finger sloughs and You may get lucky with some Mallards.  Most of the ponds are frozen in the Chehalis Valley.  My buddy hunted the main pond on the property today and shot a couple ringers and a Buff today, but that's it.  Been a real bad year down here so far.  Some properties are a 15 shell max.  It is enforced so make sure you read the signs at each property.

All that Blue Slough, Mox Chuck, Preachers Slough are open and good when things are frozen for shooting greenheads.
