Upcoming wolf hunting trip
«
on:
December 08, 2013, 11:43:40 PM »
upcoming idaho wolf hunt. So in February me and my buddy are going on a wolf hunting trip in idaho, probably in the sawtooth gmu. Planning on driving in as far as I can and then walking in and setting up a base camp. Any advice on wolf hunting in general, calls, howls, scentblock? Not my first run in with wolves. Almost was dinner for a small pack of 6 timberwolves a year ago, nasty mean critters. No fear in their eyes at all. But that being said advice, input, opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks

I would watch as much videos as you can. Go on youtube and watch a lot of wolf hunting videos and learn how to howl. If you can at least get them to answer you, then you will be in business.

Sleep lightly, watch your backtrail.
But seriously, you have my admiration and respect for undertaking a hunt for a predator that is notoriously hard to catch. Them being a pack animal means you will have to outsmart several of nature's best hunters at once. Maybe you could luck onto a fresh kill site and stake it out from a good distance. Whatever you do don't let them get ANY man- scent, they have very good sniffers.
All the stories I've heard about putting lead into a wolf usually involved very aggressive/ fast tracking and often long shots at a moving target.
Others tell how it is nearly impossible to get them to take baited traps, or how when snared would drag away 50-60 pound deadfall logs anchoring the trap.
Old trappers tales, but largely based on fact, pretty easy to understand why the ranchers had no love for them.

Thanks man, yeah me and a buddy got circled at night by timberwolves, in brush where you couldn't see more than 1 foot in front of you. Thankfully the truck was close. 14 rounds fired between two people didn't phase them at all. Once we got to our rig one of them came up and rocked the truck. Mean aggressive animals. They are very smart tactful hunters, they even tried diversions to flank in on us as we were moving back to the truck. Definitely not small at all, and I have a lot of respect for them! Any other tips?

Find the food, they are around. Not an easy take. They learn fast.

good luck
and future note, this subject always seems to bring out the trolls in force. I would suggest using pm's on this site and not giving out private emails in the future. Much easier to forward the pm's to a admin and have that member banned then get them (and probly a long list of partners) banned from your email.
