Attracting Blacktail bucks to your property
« on: December 10, 2013, 04:38:16 PM »
How do you attract black tail bucks to your property, I have a few does running around but have only seen a few bucks on my property, how do you get them to hang around..the does are off limits but bucks are fair game say the girls of the family. Any hints or ideas would be great thanks..got plenty of acres of property.

Are there enough acres to keep the does (and their fawns) in their own section and have the bucks in another.  Seems when around an inhabited area the bucks only seem to hang around the does during the rut.  I've seen a few areas where a lot of does stake a claim for most of the year, but if you go to a different corner of the property where the does don't spend a lot of time, the bucks hang out there.  Usually it tends to be a brushier/quieter area.  But not so brushy you can't walk through.

Tagging....My buddy has 25-30 acres that holds a mess of does, but he only sees a few small bucks every year.  Seems the bigger bucks hang out closer to the ag. fields half mile away.  He has often wondered the same thing.

First I'd ask if you really know the bucks aren't there? Do you have trail cameras up? If not, put up a couple and find out what's really there. It's amazing the bucks I've got on camera in certain areas where I never actually see any bucks. (Or does for that matter)

A buddy of mine has local deer on his property, apple trees and a tall grass field. We blew up a tannerite bomb with a 30-06 and 2 minutes later the does walked out about 15 yards away. There's also a 3 point that pops in and out. Let the local does be and eat on your property and you'll be good.

Look up blacktailspecialties.com. I'm not sure if he still does it since he moved to Montana but he is very knowledgeable about blacktail deer. He used to be on here as DaveBTS, hope it helps and good luck.
A bad day in the woods is better than a good day at work.
