Wyoming Elk applications a month out
« on: December 11, 2013, 09:26:36 PM »
Who is applying for WY elk this January? It's time to think about the hunt!
I am taking my wife to NW Wyoming to hunt elk in a general season area, we will be submitting for a trophy area first then the general area second, saving her 6 points for later.
I had a couple of friends hunt the unit last year and they had a nice hunt so It is time to get the wife on her first bull! Bought the new elk rifle already so time to get serious!

Are the 2014 regs out? I've never applied in WY before but was planning on it for goats. But I'm not sure what units, the seasons, etc. I like their website, lots of info (almost too much at once), but I didn't see anything for 2014.

I'd also like to get my hands on a hard copy, anyone know if that's possible without physically being there?

Go here and surf, then when the 2014 regs come out you will know what your looking for.

If you don't have points and are not really picky about the size of bucks, the units around Kaycee have lots of tags, you just have to find somewhere to hunt.

I have max pts for elk but i'm not sure if I will apply for a tag or wait and buy another point.  I have some general tag units that I want to hunt but I don't want to use max pts to draw a general tag.  So I will most likely keep looking for a unit to use my max pts in.

I bought my first point last year so I am thinking it probably isn't worth putting in anywhere for a few years so that I can at least have a couple points to throw into the pot. I also need to do a lot more reading and research about where I would want to apply. I know next to nothing about Wyoming.

Max for me too but I am not sure what to do :dunno:.  I don't know the units well enough to feel good about using my points.  Probably just buy another point.

I screwed up and missed one year of buying my elk points!!! So I'm one point short of max, the unit I apply for is tough to draw.  I'll prob just buy a point and wait till I draw for my quality elk here in wa, 19 points this next draw.  Anyone hunt units 61 or 62 for elk???
“In common with”..... not so much!!

I somehow did the same thing a couple years back, when I found out what I had done, whew I was hot! We had max for deer and antelope but spaced on the elk!!!
I believe that WY is just like Oregon, apply for a near impossible hunt unit first and pick general as a second choice, you save your points and still get to hunt an area that is better than most all units in Oregon.

You guys waiting on points should go by a left over cow/calf tag for some of the units you might be looking at so you can go and actually hunt some of the areas your interested in.  That is what I have done the last four years and it has bee great.

You can get all the draw odds and harvest reports on the WGFD website. The draw for cow tags doesn't use points so odds aren't bad even if you've never applied before.

If I had max points I would look good and hard at using them soon.  Theres a TON of people banking them right now and from everyone I talk to Wyoming has been putting out a lot of real nice trophys lately.  You never know when the F&G may raise tag numbers to help the budget thats getting tighter in Wyoming and reduce trophy quality by bringing in an orange army. I may be wrong and the Yellowstone area may recover and boom in 10 years.  But thats a long time to wait when you already have waited 7 years. My opinion is that for any out of state hunt if you have opportunity to draw a quality hunt at 5-10 years you are better off than waiting 14-20 for that one hunt as usually theres not too much difference.  There are places like Utah and Arizona where thats not an option but in Wyoming it is. Just my 2 cents.

I got aboard the wagon late and only have 5 points. I'm good with banking them and waiting until I can dedicate an entire season (and lots of gas money) to WY. Story of my life I'm always looking for a "middle of the road" hunt that takes a handful of points and has reasonable trophy quality.... :bash:

Is it possible to hunt Deer and Elk at the same time in the same unit? I cannot find seasons online, or are they separate?

Yes, at least in the units I was looking at, the deer and elk seasons both started on October 15th.

The 2014 Wyoming regulations were just posted yesterday.

The website has everything you could possibly need- harvest reports, draw odds, GMU maps, step by step instructions on how to apply for tags, how the point system and the drawing works, etc.

I'm not sure how it could possibly be any better, it certainly isn't a joke.

We should have a website ranking pool. Idaho would give Wyoming a run for it's money, Oregon and Washington would be duking it out for dead last place :bash:

You can get all the draw odds and harvest reports on the WGFD website. The draw for cow tags doesn't use points so odds aren't bad even if you've never applied before.

I've bought points the last couple of years, but haven't ever actually applied.  I have been looking through the website today and at the drawing odds.  I would like to go there on a cow hunt for a couple of years before drawing a bull tag.  How do you determine what units are next to impossible to draw unless you have max point, so I don't end up wasting my points? Do you know if they have harvest results by unit anywhere because I couldn't find them?
