Mauser Guys give me some input

Topic: 8mm mauser semi-sporterized. Circa 1965 Jason 4x scope (with a broken reticle) on weaver bases.
History: was my Dads, a hand me down to me, he is deceased so I know no other history.
Shoots pretty decent 1.5-2 in at 100 with hand loads.
All the parts have matching numbers

If you look at the pics of the casings there is a linear defect just below the neck of the case, not very pronounced. I assume this is a casting defect in the chamber of the barrel. Long term affects?

I have been wanting to turn this into a project.
Is there any value leaving as is?

Goals: consider turning the barrel/recrowning. It now has original sights and "step taper" (very good patina....almost rust proof)
Maybe a new stock? ideas?

The trigger is standard Mauser, almost a 2 stage. The action is fairly slick but could be buffed a bit.

Curious as to what you would do?
I have not set a budget, but would like some ideas for options.

 Aside from sentimentle value coming from your father, I would say with the already cut down stock collector value isn't going to be an issue. Some fine tuning isn't going to hurt it.

Yea I kind of figured the collector $ would be gone.
Just fishing. Know I could buy other options for cheaper, but I have several other calibers and don't really need to rechamber into something else (although would be fun to hear of other options)
Basically this is a after hunting season internet info gathering trip.

 1. Send it to ER Shaw for a barrel and bluing.  Caliber, just about anything with a .473 head.

 2. Install a Timney trigger.

 3. Drop it into an after market stock

   VZ24's are great actions.  you're only limited by your budget at this point.  there are cheap stocks like a boyds or ramline and there are expensive stocks like McMillian.  same with barrels.  cheap like adams & bennett (which i had good luck with) and expensive like Hart or douglas air gauged.  Can't go wrong with a timney trigger, but i've had good luck with optima, too.

If you want to do more of it yourself, i have a barrel vice and action wrench, and quite a bit of mauser experience.

Before I'd do anything I'd poke a bore scope down the chamber to see what the scratchy issue is.  It might be able to polish it out.   This is unless you hate the 8mm Mauser.

I agree, contact E.R Shaw barrels and have them Rebarrel it. They have a bunch of long action cartridges available and their prices are reasonable. That is a great bullet proof action, I have a Spanish Mauser 93 that was handed down to me. It was my grandpas, then it went to my father and then to me when I was 15. Super accurate, when the barrel goes south. I will send it off to Shaw and have it re barreled to 7x57 Improved.

Nothing is safe, in my safe. When it comes to sale or trade but a handfull and my Mauser is one of them.

Allot of smiths won't even work on Mauser actions or toss them to the back of the line up. That's why Shaw is a great place for allot of actions other than Remington's and Winchesters.

A chrome moly barrel is 175.00, a bit more for a stainless. 120.0 to fit the barrel. That includes crowning, threading, chambering and truing the bolt face/lugs.

Ultra or H&H? I've shot both quite a bit over the years. In the timber the .375 H&H shines, where as the .375 Ultra is a power house to way out there.

have to agree! Its just a thing, the values is in the memories of it belonging and being used by your dad..i have several rifles with huge sentimental value, and will never be reworked and changed! the 2 i had rebarrelled by Shaw ( a 257 bob and a 257 bob ackley) had zero sentimental value..just tools.

It shoots well enough to just leave alone. And certainly can take the knocks of hunting.
I had just been considering doing something else with it. I have other rifles/shotguns of his that were hand me downs as well, but not necessarily project guns.
