Chinook salmon guide
« on: December 13, 2013, 11:57:46 AM »
I am looking into buying my dad a weekend fishing trip for his 60th birthday. His birthday is on Feb 2nd but any time of the year for trip would work. Any recommendations on time, river and or guide to go with to try and get him on some nice Kings?

Personally, I'd buy a trip down near the mouth of the Columbia during the Springer or June Hawg runs.  While I thoroughly enjoy our king fishing here on the upper Columbia, nothing beats catching chromers fresh out of the salt.  There are several threads on here before of good guides on the lower stretch.  I know of a few, but they were all mentioned in these other threads.

B-10 is supposed to be good again this year if the forecast released yesterday is correct.  Usually lots of fish and nice weather.  Might look to the coast in the fall too.  If you time it right, 20 or more kings can be the norm....

I found some old threads about this and just sent out a few emails as feelers to see what is available. Not sure if I would just get two seats to have my mom and dad go or try to book the whole boat and see if I can get some of his buddies to go.

If you're gonna book at least two, I'd book the whole boat.  Usually on only about 1/3 the price more to have the entire boat and at least a couple more seats. :twocents:

That is what I was thinking. Book the whole boat and then only have 2-3 go out for more room and more personal experience.

I learned a lot about salmon fishing from Bob Sommer, owner/operator at Guidelines Fishing.  Good guy and comfortable boat, fishing mostly on the Cowlitz.

I highly recommend Tom Lines of tight lines sport fishing.  He's out of Des Moines.  He's one of the best herring fisherman I know for springers.

Some of the best is at Buoy 10 the 3rd week of Aug...  Good catches of bigger kings during that time frame that can't be beat...  Search now for decent guides with openings, they will book up, Josh at Three Rivers Marine is always a consistent catch kind of guy.  There was a girl this past year, on her boat they out caught everyone three or four days in row- and I mean everyone.  She had a great sense of humor every time we crossed paths.  Can't remember her name or guide service???  Crap sorry...

Been looking at pictures to see if I could find the boat name, but that name does ring a bell.  She was a cutie too, if it is the same one...

What kind of fishing are you wanting to do?  You can troll saltwater, troll rivers, fish bait in small rivers or big rivers, jet sled or drift boat, etc.  You should probably figure that out first and then you can get some very specific recommendations.

Andy Coleman of Andy's Angling Adventures. He fishes the Cowlitz mostly. He grew up on that river and knows it well. Great fisherman and captain. His boat is awesome as well. I've never not caught fish with him.

He has done all the styles you have listed above so that is why I didn't specify. I am up for anything that will give him a chance ot hook into a few solid chinook and give him a solid arm workout.

:yeah: It's not exactly rocket science. With all the info and technology out there, its more about where and when you want to fish. Biggest difference in guides is how hard they are willing to work and their people skills.

Best chance for multiple hookups with bright chinook would be bouy 10 late August IMO. Might get more fish, but not as bright with an upriver guide. Heard good things about Willipa with George Rose- late Aug/sept also.

Smaller rivers of westside could certainly produce hot action, but are just too hit & miss to recommend really far out.

Something on the Ocean would be worth considering. Probably widest window and most consistent for pretty much a guarantee on fish.

Would prefer the rivers just because the last few times we went, in Sitka, was out in the ocean. Also, I believe my bro in law gets sea sick and he is planning to go.

Since you're asking for "last minute recommendations" does that mean you have decided to go on the trip on or around February 2 ?

If that is the choice, know that there is no chinook fishing in rivers this time of year. Closest would be springers on the Lower Columbia- maybe March and later for better numbers.

Only thing open now is the Sound. Port Townsend area is open- some others- not sure. I think Mark Coleman fishes the Sound doesn't he?

Probably get the most action taking a trip in august on the lower columbia.  Any guide will be able to put you on fish.  I know that the Holts were killing them last year and doing several double trips per day.  So two groups of clients both limiting out in one day.  Kinda hard to beat those numbers.  Now thats gonna be a troll fishery where you just sit back and watch your rod bury.  Maybe you want something a little more involved?  Might book a trip on the cow in september with someone like Andy Coleman doing some hover fishing for kings.  There are a bunch of guides that do that fishery, but I don't know them personally. I do know Andy and he is a super good guy.

Good luck and have fun

I was talking to the WDFW fishing focal and he said they are expecting a better then last year run of fish.  Something like 100K fish coming up the Columbia more then last years estimate.

What was last years estimated number?

Lol, easy to catch em when there are 700000 fish under for anyone. Try your "not rocket science" when fishings tough. Sorry, you haven't a clue about salmon fishing.

Why do research, just Call Ron Holt and book a B-10 adventure. I dont think there is an argument that he is not the best.

Sure there is. There are a lot of guides out there that are just as good or better than the Holts!  But yes they are good fishermen!

Lol, easy to catch em when there are 700000 fish under for anyone. Try your "not rocket science" when fishings tough. Sorry, you haven't a clue about salmon fishing.

I have to say I agree with you completely. Not agreeing that your recommendation for a guide is clearly the only answer absolutely means I haven't a clue about salmon fishing. Who could possibly argue with logic that clear.

It's only your first paragraph I'm referring too.

parts of the strait are open.  I've heard around that the nooks have been biting pretty good from port angeles to port townsend.  Fishing near the bottom.  Guys have said it is making up for the void of the steely season.

Gotta agree with carvermoe, go with The FisherE.com. Go Springer fishing with him in late March, early April. Or Bouy 10 any time in August. You guys wanna hook fish, call him..you will not be disappointed!
