scope for 270 for 13 year old
« on: December 14, 2013, 11:35:58 PM »
I got my 13 year old boy a Ruger American 270 for Christmas and wondering what a decent middle of the road scope would be for this gun. I am a archery hunter and do not know a whole lot about rifles and looking for suggestions. Also, what price range should I be expecting to pay for suggested scope? Thanks

Leupold VX-2. 3-9x40.       Should be around $270 give or take a little depending on where and when you buy it. And its teenager proof.

Same scope fastdam suggested. Can't beat it for the price. Not sure if you'll get it for $270 though. They used to be $299 and I thought they had gone up slightly since last time I checked. If you don't want to spend that much, get the VX-1.

vx1 or vx2 depending on what you want to spend. Also the redfield scopes are doing pretty well and are a little less money. I have been playing with 3 of them and had pretty good luck with them so far.

I do have an older nice weaver that would probably work for you. Pm me.

Elknutt does some great deals on Vortex, might be able to get higher magnification for about the same price as Leopold.

Check out opticsplanet.com they have some great prices.  I gave barska scopes a gamble for my .22 its not getting a lot of shock for shooting but I throw it around a lot more than I should, but its held up to some serious abuse and their prices start around 30 bucks.
Now then, get your equipment—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me.  Gen. 27:3

vortex diamondback BDC, should be able to find one for around 159.00, great warranty of the kid drops it.  put one on my Ruger american 270, and it has been a great combo, cloverleafs at 200yrds with reloads, and knocking down steel targets with the BDC out to 500 consistently

Carpsniper did. And that's a good option. That's what I would go with, as I believe they are made in the USA just like the Leupold's are.

Talk to elknut1 and have him set you up with a Vortex Diamondback.

:) Find a used Leupold it has the same warranty as new one!! I think a great scope on an average gun is better than a medium scope on a great rifle.
You bought a real good gun put on an excellant scope, my 2. :dunno:

Young hunters tend to fiddle with things when the action is slow.  I've found the a fixed power scope is a better starters scope for young hunters.  A new Weaver Classic K-4 or K-6 has great glass and no Fast -Focus or power ring to fiddle with and spoil a first chance at a shot.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

That Weaver K4 would be a great choice! They are very reasonably priced too.

that would be a good fit or one of the newer redfields . I shot a redfield on a old m77 .270 for years without any fault . I would suggest some leupold bases though , I'm really not a weaver style fan .

For what it is worth my daughter has a 4.5-14 Pentax pioneer II (great deal at Sportsmans during first owner transfer) on her .270 and my son has a 3-9 Leupold on his .243 they both prefer the 4-14. My son though a LOT smaller than my daughter, is begging me for an upgrade to 4-14. He even shoots her .270 better than his .243 just not as many times...something about recoil and smaller bodies  :dunno:.... :chuckle: :chuckle:. I told him he will get a new scope when he shoots a bigger rifle and we can go after bigger game. There is no shot he will take with his .243 that the 3-9 will not be just fine.
