Duck might have some good advice if the snow gets too deep.  Otherwise it might be back to the plowed roads in the Methow.  I'm fighting the fight right now whether I am going tomorrow or not

The dick mesa is all private now. huge big white sign, big gates at the top.  so are you meaning there, or more north, like ribbon cliff stuff?  I sure wouldnt want Dan to go up there and shoot a buck somewhere he shouldnt be.

Snow getting bad enough to ground the snowcat, Dan?  Seems like you had a couple of sleds half ways lined up.  If that's not happening, it might be worth a call to Byron to see if he can find anything local to help out.

Good luck tomorrow.

Sorry for the short update, I'm just getting a little disgrutled. We took 50Cal's Dodge to the top of Oklahoma where he saw the 5x6 yesterday. We chained up in the dark and everything was looking good, we get close to the top and here come the clouds and snow. Total whiteout, can't see jack. We make it to our destination and try to sit it out. An hour later it's still all white so we get out of the truck and hit it anyway. After a couple hour walk in the storm we return to the truck. I'm starting to remember certain deer and have started naming them. Many of the deer you could only see their heads as they were hunkered down and totally covered with snow, several inches deep (I took some great pics of just heads peaking out of the snow). From here we went for a drive near the houses at the top of Oklahoma. About half way down one skid road, a monster dark horned buck with great mass and tines (well outside the ears) jumped up out of its bed 50 yds from the road. My heart rate went from 60 to 160 instantly, but returned to 60 just as fast when I saw it was a 3pt. It was perfectly symmetric, a very nice buck. I may or may not have a pic of him as I had to dig the camera out and the buck ran away at mock 30. The rest of the day was spent looking at the normal smaller deer hunkered down as we dropped down to Mud and then out to Navarre.

Thanks for the info duckfvr.

I'll be in touch Garrett.

Bone, tell her you will bring her some salmon and dungeness crab in August if she lets you out. :chuckle:

You should get better weather tomorrow, according to the forecast.  Visibility should be much better than a whiteout!

Hopefully, with the last few days of snow and the storm today, the deer make hay tomorrow and give you a chance.

Stay frosty and hammer a toad.

Hey Gray Brow this is 50 Cal Jim on 300's putor again here in Chelan. Yea Dans " snowcat" is pretty much grounded but we've been abusing my truck & he doesn't seem to mind much. Ya know you always hear people doing the Dodge, Ford, Chevy talk & I normally couldn't care less but I gotta brag about my Dodge Ram Diesel. The snow has really started to pile up here in the last couple days & I've been takin the old Ram were I got no business going but hey were going for broke & we'll worry about getting out later. But with 4 chains & a winch we've made it out of every hell hole that I've entered so far, I kinda hinted to Dan about 20 times today he better get some damn sleds up here because we're wasting to much time driving in 4 low granny & it's just not very efficent use of time. On a final note we ran into the couple that live in a log house on top of Okie Gulch & so we stared *censored*tin  with them & they seemed to be pretty cool  & the guy said the # were down but there was a mister big come thru a couple days ago so were going to hunt really hard tomorrow & see what happens & then I'm homeward bound & poor Dan is on his lonesome.  :'( Merry Christmas to all.

I am planning on heading over on Wednesday 300, bagging the fishing for the week. I have your number and will find you if I see anything above 180. I'm planning on hitting the areas in the Twisp/Winthrop area that I know very well, there has got to be some pigs in there. Shoot straight and post if you drop something, I will be taking my laptop and try looking for an unsecure wifi to check on things.
The things that come to those who wait, may be the things left by those who got there first!

Just going back to the Dick Mesa topic. There is some nice deer in that area and it not all private. The top is but there is lots of area in the ridges running towards the Entiat river. Garrett Knows the area pretty well and seems to find nice bucks in there every year.    You will know the private land when you see it. Lots of signs and a three foot trench cut thru a field and a gate that could stop a tank.

Christmas Eve Update:

Today began like most days, I get up, throw on the wool pants, grab all the hunting gear, drive to the happy hunting grounds, and install chains just before daylight (I'm starting to know what Bill Murray felt like in groundhog day). Weather was clear and everything looked good. 50Cal and I plow up to the top to find very high winds, snow drifting everywhere. The deer numbers up high were way down today. I walk out into a known area for holding lots of deer to find two small bucks and a dozen does. 50Cal goes to his favorite scoping area and finds very few deer. I walk out to the truck about 11ish and we drive out a skid road where we have seen many good deer before. The wind is starting to blow harder and harder. We walk out a few finger ridges to do some spotting but can barely see due to blowing snow and the wind speed picks up even more. After about an hour of spotting we return to the rig to move to lower ground out of the wind. About half way out of the skid road we see a very ugly site. The wind had blown in 2-3ft of snow over a 100 yard section of our road. I start shoveling and 50Cal attaches the winch cable to a stump up the road. Three winch settings, one thrown chain, some off road crazy driving by 50Cal, and an hour later we are free and clear. I wish I would have made a video of the last minute of the this process, I have never seen someone put a vehicle through what 50Cal did. We move to lower ground and there are deer everywhere but no shooters. A small four, couple of nice threes, lots of smaller bucks and does. Overall the day was very entertaining.

Tomorrow, while all of you are sitting around eating great meals and getting fat and sassy, I will be climbing a mountain, hunting for a trophy mule deer.

Huntnphool, I appreciate your support.

UBA, thanks for the info.

Merry Christmas to all...
