food plot and blind
« on: November 08, 2008, 07:45:25 PM »
looking for some advice.  I have permission to archery hunt on a local farm and have been seeing a few deer and a herd of elk.  No luck on either yet but we are still trying.  We have located the two spots the elk enter the pasture, one spot on each side.  Each night we choose a side to set up and they end up coming in from the other side.  By the time they make it across to us it is too late to shoot.  I figure it would be too much of a "change" to put up a blind in the middle of the pasture now since we only have two days left on my wife's elk rifle tag (but hunting with a bow) so I am planning on putting one up next year.  I am wondering how far in advance I should put it up.  I am also thinking about buying some kind of seed to plant to help keep the animals coming back.  Don't have the equipment to do a fancy food plot but something I can just sort of throw out like grass seed.  Could probably do something like a garden in one of the corners.  Any ideas?

Go around and collect apples.  They love apples.  Start throwing em out the week before or so.  They'll come back daily for them.

i would recommend putting the ground blind out atleast a week in advance, but the more in advance the better.....but honestly it may not effect them at all if you see the elk and deer using the same patterns. If anything i might get a floor blind(duck or goose blind) and do that.....those animals wouldnt even notice you in the field.....

thanks for the ideas guys.  We went out again tonight and set up in a different spot but didn't see anything.  One more night to go.  Even if we don't get anything it has been fun and a great intro to hunting for my wife.  Last week we had a spike and a two point within fifteen yards and a couple of nights before that we had three cows within 20 yards.  Too bad it is 3 point or better.  One night we did have one that was a 4 or 5 point at about 40 yards but it got too dark.  Fingers crossed for tomorrow night.
