This one was killed by my hunting partner last Saturday. The hunt started on thursday night for us. We spent most of the night driving road and looking for fresh tracks in the snow. We located a pack of 4 wolves on friday morning and started tracking them.

They were working a ridge with lots elk and moose sign. We tracked them for 5+ miles in fresh snow and could not catch up with them. We had to turn back because it was getting late.

We drove around and checked the basin we thought they were dropping into. We discovered that they had not crossed the road and were still on the ridge.

I had a wolf trapping class on Saturday and could not go. My partner did not want to go without me, I told him he was crazy not to go, we had them located and a good idea of where they would be the next day.

He went up the ridge on Saturday am and discovered they had crossed the road over top of our track from the evening before. He set up the Fox Pro and started the lone wolf howl.

10 minutes into it he had a wolf at 30 yards :} 55gr BT out of the .243. snow nap!

After the shot the wolf dropped in its tracks. Another wolf walked out at 15 yards and just stood there. He only had one tag in his pocket and let it walk. He is a better man than me :}

I went out to the same drainage today. Snow was old and slushy, made for tough tracking. I covered lots of county and was howling about every 1/2 mile. I located a drainage with 8 different moose in it and figured there would be some wolves around.

I let out a few howl and got a reply from the drainage below me. We howled back and forth every 15 minutes for over an hour. I did not want to drop into the drainage due to the thick and brushy timber. I knew visibility would be 30 yards or less.

I dropped in about 200 yards and let out a couple howls and got a quick response. I closed in another couple hundred yards. I let out another couple howl and got no response. I was standing in the timber and could only see 20 yards or so. I waited about 3 or 4 minutes and started walking again. I stepped out from behind a small fir tree and there he was 25 yards on a dead run right at me.

We saw each other at the same time. He turned inside out and bolted. He was gone in a flash and I never got a shot off.  :bash: :bash: :bash:

I just sat there a smiled, pretty cool experience. I will get him next time :) :)

Will be hitting it hard the next few months. We are allowed 5 wolf tags this year, would love to fill my tags.

I will post some wolf trapline pics when I get them out. Waiting for some more snow.

No-res tags are only 50$, come on over guys!!!! :) :)
