spaniel or long hair bird dogs
« on: December 20, 2013, 09:21:31 PM »
As much as I love my dog and his ability to find birds there is always one thing that gets me and it makes a long night after hunting.. Are there any secrets you have to help in any way to keep the burrs from getting stuck in his ears and legs? my weim obviously has no problem with this but my boykin is like a attractant.
Thank you for any help
If its brown knock it down

I learned with my first spaniel that shaving before hunting season is far better then trying to shave them after all the burrs are in there hair. I tried the petroleum jelly in hair and a dog jacket but found shaving to a #1 worked the best.

:yeah: Get yourself a GOOD set of clippers or take the dog to the groomer end of july or therabouts, shave em down with a pigshave, inside the ears, outside of ears.Give a haircut so that the dog looks just like the weim, you'll be good to go for the season.I had springers for years and they all got the buzz cut.I've got setters and the wooly ones get haircuts, the not so wooly ones get trims in the right areas that are the burr catchers,Ears and leg featherings.

I find spraying down the collection areas of his body with PAM works well. Avoid the garlic flavored  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

After some miserable experiences clipping burrs out of my Boykin, I don't mess around anymore. Bought a good set of clippers and shave him to the nub at the beginning of every season. We are both much happier now.

Ditto on the ShowSheen recommendation.  Spray the dog down and comb the hair the day before or just before the hunt.  They'll still pick up burrs, but..... not as many and more importantly they are much easier to comb out.   In addition,  an aluminum Mane comb is handy.  Both can be found at most tack stores.
