Anyone hunt in SE Oregon?
« on: December 11, 2013, 09:54:24 PM »
Does anybody hunt in south east oregon? I was down there in the summer and all I saw were antelope. Was thinking there should be some good hunting down there close to the nevada and idaho border and around burns junction. Of I course, I heard about the big fire a few years ago that destroyed hundreds of thousands of acres and killed thousands of cattle.

Just curious. That is close enough to a desert to me. Hotter than heck in july and those storms are intense :yike:.

I've been researching a little on malheur county zones 67 and 68 and am going to look at harney county.

Great Chukar hunting on the East Slope of the Steens Mtns.  Also a "quality area" for muley's but its a hard tag to come by.  Never hunted big game down there, but spent a lot of time chasing upland, waterfowl and fish.

Check out some of the quality you might see down there from these photo guys.  Simply amazing photography!

I grew up hunting down there, had to move up here about 20 years ago, so age 12 to 34 I guess is a pretty solid resume. Yes it's good Antelope county, and outstanding deer country. For a diehard chukar hunter the steens, hartmt can be pretty good. I drew a once in a life time bighorn tag way back in 81 for the Steens. Killed a damn nice ram, 172 green, but comparatively speaking saw some bucks that made me weak in the Knees. Last December I glassed a couple of bucks while chukar hunting above the Mann ranch that went well over 200.  I killed about 20 bucks down in the Steens, all were at least 4 points and two I should have measured someday.
If you have the legs for it and will get off the top and actually get down in the cliffs to start your glassing, think sheep hunting, You will find some great bucks. Glass like your looking for goats or sheep and you'll be amazed at the bucks you find in unbelievable places. I think it still would be a great draw for a non resident.
One more secret about the Steens. Most guys overlook the big sage country on the south west slope.  There are some really good bucks in there as well.

why would I tell you, I've got more points so you won't be competing with me and my sister married well so I have access to private ground. If you draw get a hold of me, have your map handy and I'll get you dialed in.
Then you, me, my GSP and what ever 4 legged buddy you have will go chase some chukar in Wa.

It is a tough tag to draw for a non resident, but most of them are.
