Thinking of upgrading
« on: December 21, 2013, 02:17:12 PM »
I have a ruger m70 270 with paddle stock that I don't shoot very well, i bought it used and it has a cheaper scope on it. I was thinking about just getting a nice scope but if I'm going to do that I should probally get a gun to go with it. I'm leaning towards a tikka300 win mag or Remington 700 and a leupold or vortex Diamonback scope. Problem is I know nothing about scopes or which gun would be better. I plan to hunt deer and elk and bear. Hopefully I'll get stationed in Alaska for my next tour so I would use it for grizzly, caribou and maybe moose up there. Mainly I want it to shoot good and last a long time. Any suggestions help.

I would suggest deciding for yourself, all of what you have mentioned will work. Remington's are great, some like Tikka's. Grab whichever rifle shoulders well and feels more comfortable and familiar to you. I personally can't stand Tikka's but I also can't stand Hippies, compact cars, Chiwawa's, chicks with big mouths, Road closed signs, Barnes bullets, the current "Administraion" and guys tagging around behind chicks like a puppy on a leash. So I may be all screwed up and completely spun off tangent but it's worked for me so far.

Gotta love this guy. 8)

Tikka T-3 Lite    Love it. Hate the clip but the gun shoots fantastic. It's my 'go to' rifle for deer, elk, and bear!

Looks like 'bod' has a great deal on a 300 Win Mag in a Tikka on here. Check it out.

The 700's are beautiful, but have a reputation for needing work right out of the box to get them to shoot right. Personally, I've never shot a CZ I didn't like, especially if you like the old school look of nice wood.

If you're going for a more modern rifle, Savage and Tikka owners usually seem happy.

Brian,
Buy the Tikka 300WM that's in the classifieds.
Rugers and Remingtons keep gunsmiths in business.
I have a Tikka 300WSM if you'd like to test drive it.

If you're going to Alaska, make sure what ever it is, its a model designed for bad weather..................maybe look at some of the .338s too.

Tikka and a Vortex. Good "Bang" for your buck!

( dont you all love when the Tikka/Remington, leupold/Vortex debate gets raised again? ) lol

Redundant...

5,000,000 plus and still going,  can't be wrong. ;) Theres a reason it's the top selling bolt action rifle in history. 8) Like Optics companies starting out only dreaming to be as big as Leupold, they can give it a shot but Leupolds been here a LOOOOONG time, they have sold a ocean of optics and have set their name in stone.

Either may not be the end all but neither are lacking or a poor choice.
