Capitol Forest Coyote
« on: December 22, 2013, 12:18:27 PM »
Instead of deer hunting today I decided to see if I could find some coyotes. I don’t think I have gone coyote hunting in nearly two years and my .234 was last sighted in with 100gr rounds but I took it anyway.

Just before daylight I headed to a steep cut where last week I put part of an elk hide and some lower leg bones. I drove up the spur and stopped about 100 yards from the landing. Yep, I parked before the end of the road.

The cut below was fogged in so I waited in the truck until about 8 am. After the fog lifted I grabbed my rifle and ecaller and headed to the landing.

The wind was basically blowing to the northeast so I set the call up about 20 yards behind me and to my left. I eased up to the edge of the landing trying to quietly set up next to a large slash pile.

Before I sat down I scanned the area and saw a flash of white just over 100 yards away, near where the elk hide was left. I wasn’t sure if it was a coyote or a fawn so I ducked down and looked for a rest.

I found a small pole sticking out of the slash pile to rest on and continued scanning for movement. Just as I was reaching for the ecall remote, I saw another flash of white and then saw the coyote jump up onto a cut round of wood.

A second later it was all over.

Looking back to the stand.

That's great! I need to get out and kill some of those fawn killers. It's been a while for me too.

I live in Lacey and I am a predator hunter.  We should hook up for some hunts.  I have some local places scouted out.  Saw three bobcats in November deer hunting.  I am getting a Fox Pro Shockwave from Santa.  I also have full set up for night hunting which is more challenging but fun.  Just put a Jewel trigger on my Remington Varmit .22-250.  Shot quarter sized groups at 100 yards with Hornady Superperformance 50gr.  Nice looking dog.  Male or female?  What where you calling with coyote? or prey distress?  Send me a PM if interested.  Merry Christmas.
