coyote numbers
« on: December 22, 2013, 05:58:25 AM »
Long story short.  Put out a coyote carcass Friday afternoon, heard coyotes howling on it about five pm, by morning, it was all gone, except the spine.  Coyote tracks everywhere.  How many coyotes do you think I am dealing with, in this case?  The carcass was a large male.

Any estimates?

Hard to answer but 2 coyotes can clean a deer in a day with the help of some birds.

Weird tho, cause ive put out carcasses on my property where there are coyotes, and the never touch another dead coyote  :dunno:

They must have been really hungry.  I've seen coyote carcasses that even the mindless Magpies don't touch!
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

Was this a yote that was local or did you import the carcass? If imported perhaps it was the scent of an intruder that caused it to happen.

Good point, Ridgeratt.  I actually put out two carcasses.  One was local, the other from out of area....they ate the one from out of area.  By the way, I called in a nice male and shot him at the carcass location that morning.  :chuckle:  He didn't appear overly full, or in starving condition.  Lots of fun, here!

I've put a lot of coyote carcasses out when trapping years ago. Can't think of a time they ate them, ravens, hawks and even an eagle ate them. Birds would slick them up in short order. Coyotes came around and investigated them but never ate them. Use it as a draw station and shoot as many as you can!

I threw a skinned carcass out about two, three weeks ago. Parked where I threw him out at today. It dosnt even look like a bird has been on it, muchless a dog around it. Dog tracks about 20yds from him in the snow but nothin at him.  :dunno:

I have actually seen a coyote eating on another, so there is no question that it happens....just wondering how many to eat one overnight.

Next time put a trail cam on it.  I always use trail cams at my bait sites. Some times you end up with 1000's of bird pics but you'll also see how many dogs are hitting it and when.  Most groups I see around here are 2-4 with an occasional 5th pulling up the rear.  They seem to pack up alot in the fall and stay that way till breeding season.
