The Weatherby Vanguard and Howa 1500 are the same rifle. I don't have either one, but I can tell you, I love those 20's.
I have one in 223 with a thumbhole stock. I had the whole gun/scope camo dipped, new trigger, and hand loaded up a killer 55 grain hornady round and I wouldn't trade that gun for nothing. Nickel size 5 round group at 200, buy a Howa

A guy who has a Howa just bought a Timney Trigger for his gun. Said it would be a big improvement over the stock trigger. The same trigger fits the Weatherby Vanguard rifle. I don't think you can go wrong with either gun. Just a matter of what caliber. I'd get a .243, since you'll probably like it so much that you'll want to hunt deer with it too.
I think I'll get a 300 RUM since I already have a few vermin guns.

I need a big gun for elk hunting since I'm retired/disabled and can't chase elk. I want them to drop in their tracks.

Just don't be like the guy that took his .300 RUM to the range to sight it in and complained that the gun wouldn't group worth a darn. When he packed up and left, he left his brass there, and it turned out he bought a box of .300 Win Mag ammo. That brass sure had a short neck!
