Straight hanging conveyor belting or matt helps absorb the impact. the more the backstop is able to swing the more force is absorbed by the motion, otherwise thicker material is necessary. Rules for archery courses is 15deg from target should be safe. Obviously the backstop is bigger or smaller depending on how far away you are from the target while shooting.
