any tips for a first combo gun for a 9yo?
« on: June 16, 2015, 10:13:11 AM »
I want to get something for my 9yo son, and I like the idea of a 20 gauge/.243 or something like that.  Not dead set on caliber. Over/under would be nice but I would be fine with a quick barrel swap set up as well. I dont know where to look online, searches for combination guns have not been all that productive. I think I heard of one that has 20 or 12/.243/.22lr but its a barrel swap for each 3.

Savage makes their model 42 which is an over/under setup that currently is available in 22mag/410 or 22lr/410.  They used to have a model 24 that was a combo gun and could be had in a variety of configurations but I don't believe they make the model 24 anymore.

Here is a great collection of combo guns.

Pretty good outfit to do business with, I've bought a number of guns from them.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Rossi makes a kids combo setup. I got 22lr 20 ga.. I think i remeber a 3 barrel deal at one point as well. All single shot and pretty reasonable. NEF Newengland firarms do as well. I dont own any of thier products however.
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

The way modern season is anymore it practically is combat hunting in some places! But no, I am not sending my son off to war anytime soon.   Thanks for the tips guys, and the hunt wa ad. I may have to respond to that one too.

I would be carefull with a single shot 20ga.  My big 10 year old boy has a 20ga and he much prefers the 410.  Recoil can be a bit much in a single shot

My son turned 10 2 weeks ago. Shoots a youth model 870 in 20 ga and a .243. He is a good size kid but loves shooting both of them.
