what to do with coons
« on: December 28, 2013, 10:51:04 AM »
I just started trapping and today was my first day checking my line not very big but its out. So my question is what do you guys do with you coon meat. I hate to waste any thing that has a use but not sure of eating lol. Do any of you eat it or what do you do with them?

You would be surpised how good racoon tastes. I was just having the discussion last night with my cousin about the fact coon is actually better tasting than almost any blacktail I have ever got.  :twocents: I think it is really similar to a berry eating black bear. No gamie taste at all. You need to cut the fat off though just like bear.

Save up a bunch, add hog fat and make breakfast sausage or pepperoni out of it!

As mentioned, be sure to get all of the fat off, that is the strong part.  We do it in the slow cooker and make a stew out of it.  I have also slow cooked and then deboned/pulled it to make sloppy joes.

Have any of you ever used it to bait any other critters? I fleshed out the hide and I learned that you need to be slow and soft on the belly I was going to fast flipped the hide and hit a tit and rip. So I just needed to pay more attention to what I was doing but there will be more so in a few days I will be putting some in a alum tan solution and tanning them.

Well, when I toss them into a carcass pile in the woods they are the last things there the only thing that eats them is birds. Coyotes don't even eat them.
