I used a 270 for years and killed plenty of elk with it, I always stepped up to a heavier bonded bullet and really liked the barnes bullets. be careful if you switch to a 150 grain bullet with it. you loose some velocity so you will need to resight your rifle if you sight in 1.5 to 2 inches at 100 yards as the trajectory will change and the drop changes on longer shots. not a big deal if you hunt timber, but if you do, i would suggest a heavier bullet.

I am pretty familiar with the 270win. I personally shoot speer 130btsp's on top of 57.5 grs imr 4831 in one gun and 58grs in the others. they all shoot well. I have taken deer, elk, bears, coyotes.....pretty much everything with that load and never shot twice. the beauty of the 270win is that EVERY BULLET MADE was designed to work at the 270wins velocity, so fancy bullets are not needed. of the 3 bullets I remember recovering all were perfect mushrooms and had decent weight retention.

I am by no means saying that the tsx's and partitions are not good, but they are not necessary in the 270win. 270wsm or roy and it is a whole new ball of wax, but since the win is the anemic one of the 277's you can get by with less bullet.

personally i would shoot 150's that what i have dropped my elk with in the past. my father in law shot his bull last year 4 times, all of which were in the lungs with his .280 and it never acted like it was hit until it just fell over, never even took off running

I just shoot the Remington ammo. 130 gr for deer, 150gr round nose for elk. Always had good results. Don't think I would use the 130 gr for elk, seems more fragile than the 150 gr. The 150 gr round nose is perfect for the thicker cover discussed. I've always been the one to keep it simple. Mike

don't be too afraid of a 130 on an elk. I have taken them at long ranges with the 100gr 257 bullets and short ranges with the 338 win mag, same results . elk are not as hard to kill as a lot of folks think.....just hard to find.
