Young hunters tend to fiddle with things when the action is slow.  I've found the a fixed power scope is a better starters scope for young hunters.  A new Weaver Classic K-4 or K-6 has great glass and no Fast -Focus or power ring to fiddle with and spoil a first chance at a shot.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

That Weaver K4 would be a great choice! They are very reasonably priced too.

that would be a good fit or one of the newer redfields . I shot a redfield on a old m77 .270 for years without any fault . I would suggest some leupold bases though , I'm really not a weaver style fan .

For what it is worth my daughter has a 4.5-14 Pentax pioneer II (great deal at Sportsmans during first owner transfer) on her .270 and my son has a 3-9 Leupold on his .243 they both prefer the 4-14. My son though a LOT smaller than my daughter, is begging me for an upgrade to 4-14. He even shoots her .270 better than his .243 just not as many times...something about recoil and smaller bodies  :dunno:.... :chuckle: :chuckle:. I told him he will get a new scope when he shoots a bigger rifle and we can go after bigger game. There is no shot he will take with his .243 that the 3-9 will not be just fine.
