I don't know about that. Mine and a few others had some pretty good fat going on already. Nothing like some of the fatty fall bears we saw posted but I'm very pleased with mine. I think he may have been a barrell robber and into the purina possibly. We had some steaks and a small backstrap roast over the weekend from mine. The backstrap roast I trimmed it, soaked it in a bourbon peppercorn marinade, cooked it slow like brisket....it was very tasty.

Thanks Scout! I did some more reading trying to understand this thing and your response also helped. Some of the stuff on the Fish/Wildlife site was fairly confusing for me. But I get it now I think. I am only interested in one particular draw. Can't get it if you don't try, so head down, and to the grindstone I go! :o

Nah, didn't shoot him off the barrell. However, from where I shot him I know a barrell was about 3/4 of a mile away as the crow flies. Hard terrain to cover for a hunter but a bear could have for sure. I talked with Turner and the main property manager and they had a boar that ripped the barrell off a tree and jacked it all up. Could have been the same boar. I plan to ask the fella next time I see him up there if they had any more problems with an onery one.

I've only hunted one unit for spring bear, I've been drawn 4 times and killed 4 bears.  This is one of my favorite hunts, good luck in the draw guys!

Would a spring bear make for a good first bear?  I'm at three points and counting, hoping this is my year

Thanks! :)

While spring bear hunting last year I took a picture of a sow with triplets that was a co-winner of the May photo contest here.
