Favorite species to run with hounds
« on: December 31, 2013, 03:19:17 PM »
I wanted to see what everyone's favorite animal to hunt with hounds is and maybe a reason why if you want to post it. Personally I really only like to hunt bear. I just enjoy how every hunt is different. The vast differences in bear personalities makes for a different style of race each time. I love how the bear and dogs can cover miles in a very short period of time. The rush from hearing the strike to catching a glimpse of the bear with dogs hot on its rear and then hiking to the tree only to have the bear jump out right when you get there  :bash:.To me there is no hunting that compares to hunting bear with hounds. Lets here what you guys/gals have to say.

I'd say Cougar.   Love the disgraced look on their face when you catch them.    I see so many bear, that's not nearly as exciting for me.

put cougar since deer or hogs weren't one of the options.

I'd say I have an equal love for chasing cougar, bear, bobcat, and coon with hounds, I just love hunting with hounds. We were going to buy some experienced coyote dogs and WDFW outlawed that too. :bash:

Funny you mention that. Just as the wolves started to build in numbers in the panhandle I was considering switching to coyote hunting from bear hunting, then they outlawed it. That is the main reason I try to do all my hunting in Idaho instead of Washington now.

Obviously I take all my cougar hunters to Idaho. Hard for me to offer much support for an agency that would not speak up for hound hunters in 96 but has pushed for more wolves all the way.  >:(

I picked bear. I loved when they would catch them on the ground and the fight was on. I thought cougars were the easiest to catch. I ran coons that were harder to tree than most cougars.

bobcats.  they are WAY tougher to hunt than cougars and more rewarding when the dogs finally catch

Im a fan of the Bobcat, but I like running them all. Why are we sitting here talking about it use to be when yuh could. We should be pushing for hound hunting and doing something about it. And push Bill's on the hippies for *censored* they like doing start taking away from them. We need to push for a pursuit season not hunting season then go from there.
Will hunt for food

I got in on the hound hunting right before the "Dudley Doorights" voted it out. I have to say I sure miss the sound of the hound dogs under a tree with a big ole Tom in it.

Yep, I don't need dogs to find bear but its is alot more to me to tree a cat. Bear leave a garbage trail of scent, where a cat leaves nothing. I got to say my favorite races so far are those old melted out cat tracks on a south facing slope, very rewarding for me to catch them :twocents:
