bronze skull pics
« on: December 26, 2013, 04:22:07 PM »
Has anyone spray painted their bear skulls in a bronze or copper hammerite type paint and got good results? I'd love to see peoples pics.

It would probably be a bit difficult to get it to look good and not peel. There is a lot of oil in a skull and the paint would probably have a tendency to lift.

I have a few bear skulls I'm currently degreasing, thought when they are grease free I'd try my hand at painting a copper or bronze look. Any pictures or tips would be awesome.

Mine are more artsy screwing around with what I can do..... the one little skull I am working on a patina that looks like old worn leather and in person its darn close.  I use lots of different things when I make sculptures so my paints arent something specific often I use all sorts of pigments, been having good luck with walnuts on bone and plaster.

Here's mine.  I macerated, peroxided and dried the skull, taped the teeth and then painted the skull with Sculpt Nouveau's Bronze metal coating.  It's real metal flake in the paint which when dried is a true layer of metal over the object - skull in this case.  The C type coating allows you to sand and polish as you would any metal casting.  Pretty cool stuff.  I bronzed and put a patina on this skull.  I was a little heavy on the patina - I'll thin and use less next time.  Providing a link to a site that has done alot of this using copper, nickel, bronze etc.

bone is very porous so I am finding it takes almost anything I can do with plaster, I intend to try some more metallic stuff some day when I can afford the mediums I want to work with.  that is cool I will have to look into that coating but still wanna work with more traditional metal flake as well...

Annette, are you glueing direct to the skull or using the wax base method?  The first time I saw that done was by Jana Waller who I believe uses the wax.  Make sure to post a picture when you're done - would be great to see.
