put a magnet up to it.

Yup it's lead.
My buddy was at a garage sale and saw boxs of shotgun shells marked $1 ea, he gave me a call and asked if I was interested, let's just say I got twenty boxs of shells

I'll bet you dinner it's lead.  I still have some of that old Remington duck/pheasant ammo.

Usually, anything that is steel/non-toxic of any sort says it clearly on the hull.  If it doesn't say it, you can pretty safely assume that it is lead.

I've had had to go through my loose shell pile with a magnet before so I didn't end up with any lead in my blind bag.

Those make excellent chukar and pheasant loads.

Lead! I have a bunch of this #5 shot heavy duck magnums or "goose magnums"

! Don't risk it ! A few years back it was a 1,000 fine & loss of hunting rights.
Not worth the $12 bucks to buy a box of steel.
