Last trip of the year
« on: January 02, 2014, 03:35:05 PM »
Hey guys - I'm finally breaking all the rules and doing my first internet hot spot request!  Feel free to destroy me!

I want to get an east side trip in this year.  I've always been a waterfowler, and I told my wife two years ago I wanted to get into upland birds.  We bought a brittany pup and he's been AWESOME!  I wanted to spend more time in the field and hunted the wet side to keep costs down/hunting times up.

This weekend we're looking at our first and likely only east side pheasant trip on the east side for this season.  Right now I'm looking at Whiskey Dick and Wenas and trying to determing which is the better bet. Any suggestions??  We'd really like to get out there and just have a good time.  It'll be myself, my wife, and my inlaws.  I'm sure there are better areas but I'm working 100% on internet scouting and word of mouth.  Between a long deer hunt and a last minute elk hunt, I just didn't have time to get out and scout like I'd like to.

Thanks in advance, and I apologize if I offend those who want to stomp me for this :)

Curtis

Any tips for wild birds?  I know I am asking a lot - just hoping to bag my first rooster but I guess I should have realistic expectations  :dunno:

I'd skip both of those places for pheasant. Not likely to be any there. If you're willing to drive a little further East, look for public plots south and maybe a little west of Moses Lake. There are wild birds to be had. They won't be easy, but they are there. And as a bonus, you might also run into a covey or two of quail. Great for young dogs!
Enjoy your trip!

+1 on skipping both areas you mentioned. They are release sites and birds haven't been released for over a month. What the hunters haven't gotten the hawks and yotes have. You should continue east and try around Moses Lake as mentioned. The birds will be educated but you have a better chance there. I read on WDFW that this was a good year for upland birds in the Basin but I have yet to see it in person. They were pretty few and far between on my couple attempts this year. Good luck! Enjoy the dog work!

Look around the crab creek/ royal city area. Not lights out by any means but a mixed bag of quail, pheasant and pond jumping ducks will quench your thirst.  :chuckle:

Well guys, since the ladies are along for this one we ended up canceling.  I don't think they'll handle 6 hours in the truck so well.

That being said, I truly do appreciate your responses and tips.  I'm still going to try and sneak over there with the pup on my own next weekend for a last second hunt.  THANK YOU!!

Curtis
