Old Dog let me know what you find out about a local or semi local trainer or training program for your pup. I too would be interested in optimizing the potential of our new one as well. I would also be interested in what you find about the APLA chapter too.
Congrats on the breeding of Misty, bet you are excited about all the new stuff going on in your home

The local APLA chapter is actually the NW chapter, and right now is based in Centralia.  It is only 3 months old, and has very few members, but the membership hails from BC to Ore, so there is an interest.  I found out Sean Issacs is involved, so I joined.  There are a couple training days scheduled for Jan, 26, and Feb 2 in Centralia.  I plan to go to take the pup for socialization, and so I can meet some of the members.

As far as a trainer, no luck finding one on this side yet.  I'm considering sending her to John at Tiger Mt, or Ryan at Long Hollow, or possibly  Sean at Tri- Labs, buy he is all the way over to Tonasket.  :dunno:  I went to the APLA web site, and checked out the requirements for a Grand Master Pointing Retriever, and I'm going to need some pro help.   :chuckle:

Misty whelped March 10th.  A small litter, but they are very healthy.

Another update.

Misty waited a full day and then had more pups.  :bash:  :chuckle:

We now have a black female, and another yellow male.  I'll get a fresh pic up this evening.

For future reference,if the big black ball of mucous looking thing don't come squirting out after the last pup ,she ain't done.A shot of oxytocin would have cleaned her out after the 4 and youd have your 6 then. Now since that happend to you, if it was me,I'd be getting that dog to the vet for  a trained hands on  check and an Xray to make absolute certain there wasn't a stillborn pup still in her.If there is another one in there that is stillborn,it will rot, cause a massive infection and kill her.

Thanks.  That was already recommended, and we have an appointment with the vet.

Very few folks are using oxytocin any more. It can cause more issues than it solves in a LOT of cases.

If she isn't in any distress, leave well enough alone.

An xray to make sure there aren't any retained puppies is always good.

Just had a guy yesterday tell me his vet said they'll just give the oxytocin shot on the bitch's due date because, "it will make sure all the puppies and other stuff come out at once". I said WTF? I'd find a new vet.

Yeah, He didn't want to listen and also paid for AI and a very expensive stud fee for the straw. She's due in two weeks and he said he can't really tell if she's pregnant. I asked if he did an ultra sound or x-ray yet for a count. He said, "vet did that last time and didn't get the count right. The vet missed a pup" I said,"yeah, that's normal it isn't an guaranteed count". He says, "no reason to do it then"..

You can't fix stupid...

A good vet can palpitate to at least feel if there are any in there.I know who you talking about I think, you'd think he'd spend the xray money,he probably is going to try to sell those 700 dollar pups for 2000.With ANY kind of artificial the Xray after 50 days is MANDATORY,if there are less than 4 pups showing my research shows and what I WOULD do that will be cheaper in the long run should disaster occur with large pups getting stuck in the birth canal.Scheduled C section.

I only xray any more if I am not sure they are pregnant or its obvious they only have a couple of pups.

The section rate is higher on them because they can lack hormones  to be able to whelp properly.

I don't US any more. Doesn't matter if there are pups at 4 weeks. Because that is no guarantee there will be pups at 9 weeks.

Oxytocin is hardly ever used any more by most breeders. The recommended drug of choice is soluble calcium.
