Weatherby question

I have a buddy that wants to sell me his new in the box mark v accumarck in 300 weatherby mag. Opinions on gun? Good bad or ugly. Never have owned one and he has it for a pretty good deal.

The ones I've shot have been nice guns.  I love the short throw bolt, but I have never experiences great accuracy when guns have had that much freebore.  The local shop has a 240 Wby that has been taunting me for a year.  Every time I think about succumbing to it's sweet talk the freebore deal makes me think twice.  300 Wby is one heck of a round if you don't mind long barrels on your hunting rifle!

Accumarks have a 3 shot target in the box from the factory. You can inspect the SMA accuracy before you buy the gun.

I love my Mark V.  300 Wby ammo runs about $60/box.  A good round to handload.

One of the most accurate out of the box hunting rifles. Add a break and the acccuracy will improve. Very good trajectory and kenetic energy, It loves a 200 gr accubond.

12-13# scoped if I recall what a guy told me once in the woods? We met him on the trail. Same guy had to leave his rifle in the woods packing a bear out if the high country. Beautiful rifle but too heavy for me.

They are not that heavy. My hunting partners gun weighs about 7-8 lbs. Shoots very good. The gun always taken when hiking . The 338-378 stays in the truck.

7-8 pounds? Wby site claims 8 3/4 for the bare rifle. Add a scope & rings and bases and you're at 9.5 at a minimum.

The guy I talked to was carrying a .30-378 MK V and Weatherby says it weighs 9lbs 14oz bare rifle. Put rings, base and a big scope on top with a few rounds of those artillery shells and you're right there.

I've had a couple Accumarks, a 338-378 and 300Wby mag. both were bought brand new. 

The Accumark I had in 300Wby mag was bought when they first came out.  They used HS Precision stocks back then.  I'm not sure when but somewhere thru the years they switched and started using Bell and Carlson stocks.  I doubt the Bell and Carlson stock makes them shoot any different but when they switched stock companies is when I started noticing the barrel channel fit was usually not centered, barrel would be further to one side of the barrel channel than they other.  Maybe not a big deal but IMO for a gun that cost 2k you would at least think they could get the "fit" a little more centered.

I wouldn't consider the Accumark a heavy rifle.  My 300Wby Accumark had a 4.5-14x40AO Leupold and If I recall it weighed just a tick under or right at 10lbs.  The barrel on the Accumark is 26in. w/out the Accubrake.  If you get the Accubrake it adds another 2in.  Weatherby says the 338-378 has a 28in barrel but it's only 28in because they are including the brake.  Actual barrel length is only 26in just like all the other Accumarks.  The barrel contour is only a #3 which isn't really that big and is considerably smaller then a Sendero contour.  In my opinion the bigger bore Accumarks would shoot better if they put a bigger contour barrel on them but Weatherby is trying to keep the weight down so they only use a #3 for their big cannons too.  Weatherby uses Criterion, button rifled, barrels on the Accumark.  Regardless of what anyone tells you they are NOT Krieger, single cut rifling, barrels.  Criterion is/was a parent company to Krieger but they are certainly not the same company or barrel.

I've owned multiple Weatherby rifles of the years and how they shot ranged from realllllllllly bad to very good with the very best off the shelf gun I've ever owned being my Accumark 300Wby mag. I used to have.  If I was looking for a store bought all around rifle in a do anything caliber the Accumark in 300wby would likely be the first one I'd go to.

A great gun make and a great caliber 180 gr E-tips are very deadly in it.

All my "go to" rifles are Mark V's. My personal favorite is the .340, but my .300 is a close second. Have killed many elk with it loaded with a 180 grain Barnes TTX or Nosler Partition. not a light gun, but I wouldn't call it heavy. Great rifle set with a 300 yard zero, nothing it won't put down.

Well I committed to it . I didn't realize but it has the muzzle break and Leopold rings and bases for that price. Now I need a good scope.
