Kapowsin Hancock Bull down

Are all the elk in Hancock/Kapowsin and White River area Roosevelt Elk? I thought most were Rocky Mountain until you were over toward the coast more. Anyone know?

I heard rumors that years ago they planted some Rosy's up there but I'm confident the bulk of the elk are Rocky Mountain.

The state transplanted some Rocky Mountain Elk in the Ashford area up near Mt Rainier National Park in 1930. There were a couple of transplants but all in all it was less than 50 animals i believe. The elk came from Montana.They also transplanted a few up around Enumclaw. It is my opinion and the opinion of many of the taxidermists that i have used is the predominant gene pool is Roosevelt. The WDFW website has alot of published articles that tell the history of the elk in the state. Some of it is some pretty good reading and factual data. Especially i would recommend reading the 2002 North Rainier Elk Status and Trend report written by Rocky Spencer. Excellent info in there. The reason i know all this is that the last 2 years i spent fighting Pierce County over the fact that to get my building permit i had to set aside half of my property for "White River Winter Elk" Habitat of Local Importance. The real reason i fought is that it prevented me from enhancing and or improving the elk habitat on that part of my property. The funny thing is that the county restrictions in the habitat area are contrary to the states science which makes the county in violation of the growth management act. Well i could ramble on for hours on this issue, belive me i got in pretty deep.

Any way the sheer size of the bodies on the elk in this area lend weight to the fact that they are rosies. All the Bulls i have taken in the Mashell unit have been right around 1000 lbs live weight. I know of the owner of a local archery shop who shot a bull in the pack forest that Hung butcher weight at 505 lbs. It was a 6x6 that scored right around 270". That would make it just about as big as most of the washington moose that i have seen on here this year. Anyway that what i know. Hope it helped.

Oh and one other thing is that the washington record book has the entire west side from the pacific crest as Roosevelt. Boone and Crocket has Roosevelts west of I5 i belive because of the intermingling of the gene pool around Mt Rainier.

You are correct...   Those elk are Rocky Mountain

Nice Bull, I've seen many like it and bigger in there. If you know where Camp 1 is, I was born and raised there, lived there more than 25 years off and on and have seen many a nice bull in there. About ten years ago, we had an 8X8 running a bunch of cows right up behind the houses that I swear you could fit a Volkswagon Bug in its rack.

They are actually Hybrids. The remaining wet-side herds are Rocky Mountain/Roosevelt elk hybrids and include the Mount St. Helens, north Rainier, south Rainier, Willapa Hills and Nooksack herds. The genetic research has been done by several WA. State Game Biologists.

just for the record benchleg hancock has rules stating that you must be out of the gates no later then a hour after daylight. so someone needs to get their facts straight.

AH how refreshing. Someone else that actually knows the facts. It is amazing to me how many so called elk experts don't actually know what they are talking about. You obviously do. Kudos to you. Although i am not sure about the Willipa and Nooksack.If Boone and Crockett will consider any elk westof I5 as a true Roosevelt than Willipa must be pure Roosevelt. Even though Boone and Crockett does not recognize Nooksack as Roosevelt i honestly believe that they were transplanted up there from Roosevelt stock. Anybody could please correct me if i am wrong. I hate propogating false information.
