Duck Hunting White River and Nisqually Mouth
« on: January 13, 2014, 02:30:49 PM »
So I was just wondering if there is any hunting around Mud Mountain on the White River at all. I haven't been over there yet so was wondering if anybody has tried it out. Also the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, I'm not sure if it is legal to hunt there or not. Hoping someone has some past experience in these areas or other info. Thanks fellas.

So I was just wondering if there is any hunting around Mud Mountain on the White River at all.

Mud Mountain is off limits. It's US Army Corps of Engineers area and is ran like a city park. The areas surrounding the area are Kapowsin and White River Forests which are owned by Hancock and the Muckleshoot Tribe and require a fee for access. There really isn't much open areas for duck hunting in S. King and N. Pierce counties unfortunately.

Alright. Is there a strong current on the river? I have a 12ft inflatable boat with a 30lb Minn Kota motor. Will that be enough?

Braver than I.  There are currents and wind in that area.  At least the inflatable won't sink if it stays full of air.  I would want a gas motor incase the electric runs out of juice.  We don't want to read about you in the paper.

Unfortunately 'NO'. I hunt the Nisqually often and for over 25 years now. Mostly out of my canoe but also with a couple buddies with duck boats.
With currents and tides, that trolling motor isn't going to be enough plus it'll fun a battery dead in a hurry going no place on big tide change days. A row boat, canoe, kayak or motorized boat are much better. It's a large area that takes some time to learn because of the different water levels etc.
PM me and we'll do some more bs'n.

So I hung out of a kayak and have always been too scared to hunt there because of the current but you do out of a canoe? If you ever want to take a young guy who wants to figure it out pm me. I want to hunt Nisqually but not sure how.
