Sea Lions Getting Bold
« on: January 05, 2014, 10:42:22 PM »
Had a great day at Nisqually with a good buddy yesterday(Sat). We ended up with our limits but worked all day for them. Great day to be on the marsh. Bluebird day but fun.
We set up a jerk cord set up right off the bat based on the report of no wind and sun. My partner worked it constantly. After the first 5 minutes of working it, a big bull sea lion came right up on the flooded flat to eat them. We hollered at him but he continued after them above the water. We quickly waded out toward him all the while hollering and he stopped about 1' from the closest of the three on the set up to him and just looked at us. We waved our arms and hollered again and he slowly turned around and left.
After the tide change, we were moving decoys out and two other big sea lions came right up shallow after our decoys. Very close(10')to my partner. He hollered and they went under water. 5 seconds later they both came up right between us so we waved our arms and hollered at them real loud and they swam away but reluctantly.
I've had many a cripple taken by sea lions but this is getting ridiculous. I've had them follow the dog all the way in to shore and have had them beat the dog to a dead duck a time or two. Very frustrating but yesterday the river was crawling with them.

might have to start packing some slugs down there.  self defense and all...

i've noticed, those sea lions were never there in those kind of numbers before 4 or 5 years ago.  it's unbelievable how many there are now, and they only show up in december/january.  wish the indians would start shooting them, they could get away with it.

it definatly wouldnt hurt to open up a few permits for them nasty things, dont know what a person would do with them, maybe a life time of crab bait, idk  :dunno:, but either way the state needs to thin them down a bit, and we all remember how relocating them goes "hershal" it dont. just gotta kill a few hundred of them

Get a few rubber bullet rounds or bean bag rounds for your shotgun.  A quick education might make them think twice next time.
Cut em!

they tried that at the ballard locks back in the days of hershal, it didnt work, i can only imagine the amount of money the state spent on trying to make them fear humans, nothin worked, death is what is called for

They show up in bigger numbers when the Chums start to run. I have had them follow my dog. It will not go well if they bite my dog. They may all have a sudden accident. Not to say it would be me but you know how karma works.

They are pretty intimidating swimming around your little tin boat. I know I got nervous when I realized one was swimming along my buddies 12' Jon.. "I think we need a bigger boat!!"

I grew up on kodiak island in Alaska, the sealions started hanging around the docks in the mid 80's. I'd be careful with your dog around them, the sealions were known and seen to grab a dog every now and then, the dogs did not survive, once they get them in the water that's it. They even pulled a guy off a boat once,he was slanting against the rail on the boat, one jumped up and grabbed him by an ass cheek, pulled him over and then let him go,I personally knew the guy and he told me the story. When I was in Kodiak I had a stellar chase my dog when she was on a retrieve. After that I spoke to a good friend that had lived there for years and he told me the same stories of sea lions killing dogs off the boat launch.

My son lived in Sitka, AK for about 8 yrs. Hunted ducks often with his black lab Sitka. He complained often about the sea lions beating the dog to the birds he knocked down and once had the dog pulled under for a split second by a sea lion. Big boil in the water, dog bounced back up, let go of the duck and swam to shore.

Can't trace T shot!   If one came as close to me as the OP indicated, there would at least be a hole or two in the water near it.   And, don't even get me started on what I would do if one came after my dog....  :twocents:

I hope I never lose a dog to a sea lion cuz I'd be very upset. Might even do something stupid.

Anything that big and aggressive would die if it came within 10 yards of me. Period.
